Who Will Be The Biggest Thorn In The Side Of Volkswagen As It Strives For World Dominance?

Volkswagen AG threw a party for 120 guests at New York's Museum of Modern Art in early January to mark a breakthrough year in the U.S. for the German automaker. The celebration proved to be premature.

Two days later in Detroit, Hyundai Motor Co.'s Elantra beat the VW Passat to win the North American Car of the Year award, underscoring the company's status as a Volkswagen killjoy. The Seoul, South Korea-based manufacturer and its Kia Motors Corp. affiliate want to repeat their U.S. success, where they outsell the German company more than three to one, on VW's home turf.

Search for a different list to see a different result. For example, visit a British car magazine site and read the VW reviews and what great quality they are.

These reliability lists are completely subjective as best I can tell. Compare JD Power's 2011 Vehicle Dependability Study results with Warranty Direct's reliability rankings.

Suzuki is the second most reliable manufacturer on Warranty Direct's list but just one spot above VW on JD Power's list. So are Suzukis very reliable or very unreliable? Mazda's rankings show the same kind of disparity on the two lists. And look at the fact that Skoda ranks so much better than VW in Warranty Direct's list but Skodas models and VW models are essentially the exact same cars except for trim.

I guess you don't read real well. Suzuki is number two on the Warranty Direct list and only one position above VW on the JD Power list. If VW is 30th on the JD Power's list, that would make Suzuki 29th. So which is it? Does Suzuki make very reliable cars or very unreliable cars? Like I said, these list are largely subjective.

The dealers/service aspect will continue to haunt VW (as well as the other German manufacturers - but to a lesser extent than VW). Car buyers today are less likely to put up with the "recommended preventative maintenance" (aka replace all of the engine, and suspension components over six years)bull that VW tries to shove down owners throats.

I differ with you there. The dealer experience in my area has been superb. Actually they are far more competent than even our local Lexus dealer is.

the point is some dealers want your business, while others actually earn it.

Glad to hear that you have a great dealer Agent. I have also had some good VW dealer experiences but they are not nearby my work or home. Unfortunately my nearby dealer prefers not to service cars that they did not sell and VW can only say that such dealers are privately owned... Too bad for VW (and me), I'll never own another one.

Wow! That is odd they would turn away money like that.

Of course it doesn't matter what the brand is, if you can't get service for it, then you don't want to buy it. I wouldn't blame you.

What does this shit even mean?

"Car buyers today are less likely to put up with the 'recommended preventative maintenance' (aka replace all of the engine, and suspension components over six years)bull that VW tries to shove down owners throats."

This site is the worst for nitwits spouting out bullshit.

It's great for anyone in the market for a car these days. Product is better all the time, although, more generic. But there are many companies that want more market share and I don't think VW can continue to grow at it's current pace because of that.
VW thinks they want to be Toyota, but Toyota will always do Toyota better. VW's direction is a little disconcerting to those of us who liked their uniquely different offerings. And with Saab out of the picture, there are no alternatives to the pricier European cars.

At some point VW will trip over itself...

PUGPROUD just like Toyota has done this past year and GM did the past decade. Once these companies grow to big they trip over themselves.

It will be Toyota because they are only global automaker, besides maybe Ford, that is in a position to do so.

I would rather be the World's most profitable automotive manufacturer than the World's largest.

If you read the article its clearly Hyundai.

The article is clearly stating that Hyundai/Kia will be the "thorn in the side" to VW. JD Power and any other reliability survay's have always dogged VW. Toyota has not been immune from this stuff either. However they have remained at or near the top in spite of the negative reliability press. VW is also selling much better in the US with the Jetta and Passat coming out and pricing them right. This has occurred in spite of Hyundai/Kia. However VW has so many car makers in it's portfolio and supposedly will own Porsche by the end of the yr.Because of this it has tremendous market niches that have a vehicle history. This is somthing Hyundai and Kia do not have. Further there is the perception that a European driving car is superior to East Asia driving car. It is too early to predict how this will shake out but I'll stick my neck out and say VW will still make it to number one sales status. It may just take them a little longer to get there.
