SPIED: If BMW Builds A Van Is It Just Going To Wind Up With ANOTHER 5-Series GT?
As we've seen our German friends continue to grow bigger and add new products to their lineups -- in some cases even start new markets -- it seems that cars we wouldn't have expected came to fruition.

For instance, did we know that Mercedes-Benz would create a new market for four-door coupes or that Porsche's best selling product would be an sport-utility vehicle?

I wouldn't say so.

Now it appears that BMW is chasing after the van market. Yes, you read that correctly. Perhaps it will be the most driver-oriented van ever, though?

Said to be based on a MINI, pictured alongside the BMW tester, the BMW van is well...an intriguing concept. But more importantly, I think it's best not to ask if it should build it but whether BMW is chasing after too many niche groups. I guess anything's possible after the 5-Series GT.

That said, it's an interesting point - Since it appears BMW is going full steam ahead, is it just confidently strolling into ANOTHER 5-Series GT situation by creating a product no one asked for? Is failure just a by-product of innovation? OR, is the ultimate people carrier what people REALLY want and I am just out of the loop on that.

We can all agree on one thing, there is no van that people truly want, yet...

The term van used in this German publication varies from the American definition, this a five door hatch, based on the next Mini. It will be part of the 1 series lineup, and is designed for urban environments.

This should be a neat little car if they get the styling right. Considering it's been co-develeoped with the next mini there is no doubt it should be fun to drive, but I doubt it will ever come to the states.

Van for Germans= R class. If BMW does it. It will sell better than R class but not much cause most of the people find those types very ugly....it will be a low volume as the 5GT...

I looked at an R class and all I could say is wow. Even the third row has enough room for me to stretch out and I am 6'1. Second row is cavernous. Its actually the best seat. It doesn't drive near as big as it is and has way more leg room than an escalade and gets far better fuel economy with the CDI diesel. My wife is begging for one now after test driving. If you can get past the outside side view it is the best choice for a utility vehicle for those that will never go offroad. it sits low, rides great and is lavish in luxury.
