BMW Unleashes The Latest M Products - Could They Be The BEST Ms Yet? You Decide.
Years ago if you asked BMW what made an M product unique, it was a simple answer:

- Standard manual gearbox
- Rear-wheel drive
- Naturally aspirated engines

Now things have been muddied up quite a bit. A glimpse of change coming with the future was the launch of the Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) in the E46 M3. With the launch of the X5/6M, all-wheel drive was injected into the picture, as were sport-utility vehicles. Now we're seeing what I think is safe to say the most peculiar M badging on the planet.

M has gone diesel.

Equipped with a tri-turbo, six-cylinder diesel motor, the 5-Series sedan, touring, X5 and X6 are all receiving a new M variant. If you were expecting this new 381 horsepower 546 lb.-ft. of torque monsters to arrive on your U.S. doorstep, think again. The U.S. market will not see these puppies, at least any time soon.

However the last time I cried "Shame," on BMW I wound up eating crow. In addition, the X6M was my favorite M product, ever. That said, I am refraining from making a statement, but the more I think about it these vehicles have the potential to be the greatest M products ever made.

Now with an element of efficiency, plenty of power on tap and a six-cylinder in the engine bay, there could be some VERY interesting results when these cars are given a proper shakedown...

While these are fine automobiles at some point the M brand will be diluted from too many models making M cars less special, more mass marketed. BMW will then need to introduce a new moniker. Mercedes will do the same with AMG but has already begun promoting the Black Series to take top spot on its performance ladder.

These are not fully fledged M models, they are M "Tuned". Also the naming system is nothing new BMW had an M535i back in 79'. Anyway I love the niche..high powered xdrive diesels that are tuned by M. Hopefully one day they come to the US.

BMW is a true engine manufacture, they are absolutely on top of the diesel game! A luxury sedan that can hit 60 in 4.5 seconds and gets mpg in the high 30's is quite impressive.

Any new diesel engine from BMW/MB/VW faces a problem in the U.S. because it costs money to get them tested and certified for sale in the U.S., so companies have to measure demand before investing in getting it certified for sale. It's not as simple as shipping it over, otherwise they would've shipped over a few hundred 320d already to test demand.

Boy, as an old timer, it's hard to accept the M badge on these new concepts. 'M' has always been so exotic in its edginess and high state of tune type character.
However, I am in favor of the general proliferation of diesels otherwise, and especially high performance ones. Do they have to call 'em 'M's ?

The M550d sounds like the perfect car to me. All-wheel drive with a rear drive performance bias, the DPC torque vectoring system that for some unknown reason BMW has refused to stick in anything other than the X6 thus far (seriously, BMW, put this in more vehicles -- it's unbelievable), 0-60 in 4.5s or less, and 30+mpg? Sign me up.

with that performance and MPG's, how can you go wrong with any of those models? By euro standards (what you can purchase in europe) these are excellent machine. I wish I could have an M touring :(
