Did BMW Deliver A Knockout Punch With An EPA 36 MPG Highway Rating For 2012 3-Series?
One of the interesting things to come out of 2012 BMW 3-Series North American debut may not be the handling or the impressive power to the road.

It could be the the surprisingly frugal EPA estimates for new models. Edmund's Inside Line is reporting

"The 2012 BMW 328i with the eight-speed automatic, returned 36 mpg highway on the EPA cycle, 24 mpg city and a combined rating of 28 mpg. This combined rating is better than the highway rating of the 2011 BMW 328i with the 3.0-liter inline-six. That car managed 18/28 with either the 6AT or the 6MT.

When equipped with the six-speed manual, the 2012 BMW 328i scored 23 mpg city, 34 highway and a combined rating of 27 mpg."

Not bad for a brand that traditionally values performance over economy.

Hell yes they did... I am even likely to switch from a 335 to this 328 and sacrifice some acceleration for mileage, way to go BMW! I have driven the 8 speed transmission in the 528 and X3 and it is phenomenal.

good news, you don't have to sacrifice really if you don't want to -- the new 335i was rated at 23/33 and 26 combined. Ratings for both are available at www.fueleconomy.gov.

Thanks. I realize... I used to have a MINI so I sort of miss the mileage and the 328 will no doubt will still feel quick and fun to drive.

Nobody will get that mileage...it looks great on the window sticker though

Amazing a car that can get 0-60 in under 6 seconds and get 36mpg and only having 240hp. That engine has to be under rated. The Regal GS has over 30 more hp and takes 7 seconds to get to 60. I think they should have went with a small displacement inline 6 turbo (2.0-2.2) though for the smoothness, and the exhaust note is nice too. One of the best things about BMW's are their inline 6 engines.

I agree with you but it may be that a four cylinder motor has less internal friction than a six and can therefore produce better mileage than a six of the same displacement.

You are absolutely right, the inline 4 would have less internal friction, but a small inline 6 turbo would be so smooth.

It might help you to read more, Badgewhore.

"The down side to having more pistons is that, over all, the engine will tend to weigh more and tend to generate more internal friction as the greater number of pistons rub against the inside of their cylinders. This tends to decrease fuel efficiency and rob the engine of some of its power."

"This 3-cylinder engine requires fewer moving parts than the 4-cylinder engines more commonly used in small cars. By applying bore circularity machining to the cylinder block, we have reduced friction by 20% compared with conventional 4-cylinder engines."

And anyone who would prefer a Corolla over a 3-series has got some serious issues.

If you think their inline 6 is no smother than ford you are on crack my friend. At the redline they have no vibration whatsoever, and when they are pushed thats when you really feel the difference in how smooth they are. Most all V6 engines, including the one in our Mercedes are coarse when pushed, especially in the upper rev range under moderate throttle. BMW's inline 6 engines are not coarse at all even at redline. they are naturally balanced and you don't have cylinders opposing eachother requiring balance shafts. the only thing smoother would be an inline 8 or V12.

I just checked www.fueleconomy.gov -- the new 335i has a higher EPA rating than the base engines in the A4, IS, GS, and C-class. The A4 2.0T, the IS250, the G25, and the C250 all are rated lower than not just the 328i, but the 335i too. Wow. I am impressed.

spectacular balance of performance and efficiency. i'd still opt for the 335 myself, but the 328 is more than enough for most.

so bitter. jealous apparently. the average 3-series buyer is a 40 year old man. i'm not sure why you think young girls can afford $50k+ cars. what planet do you live on?

It's not only what you drive but how you drive. Do you think the idiot driving a Prius at 80 mph on the freeway is getting 46 mpg? Would take a BMW 328 over Lexus HS, no questions asked. At night, the HS looks like a Corolla.

know much about transmissions? that 8-speed is one of the best autos on the market. same one as in my F10 5-series. spectacularly smooth, responsive and efficient.

now go away.

you're a car salesman? And you're not concerned about how ignorant everything you say is? I guess it's a good thing the internet is anonymous.

I purchase cars and whenever I walk into a dealership and see a car salesman, I say to myself "Now there's a person who doesn't know anything about cars".

I've gotten 30mpg on road trips in my 335i so I would not be surprised about 36mpg for the new 328.

I highly doubt 24mpg city though as I currently get as bad as 10mpg.

But anyone who would replace a car for fuel economy is totally insane. If it costs $25k to upgrade to a 30mpg car from a 15mpg car it would take 18.75 YEARS/ 187,500 miles to break even at 10,000 miles a year with fuel at $4 a gallon. Even at $6 a gallon it would take 125,000 miles / 12.5 years to break even. And I'm not even counting higher registration taxes and auto insurance.
