BMW Out Does Last Year With A 3.1% Increase In January Sales - Mini Takes No Prisoners With A 21.2% Gain
The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported January sales of 19,739 vehicles, an increase of 5.8 percent from the 18,656 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

"The January results are the springboard for a year that will be full of new model launches beginning with the arrival of the sixth generation 3 Series in mid-February," said BMW of North America President and CEO Ludwig Willisch.  "Nationwide, inventories are low after the extraordinary sales in December and we're replenishing our dealers as fast as we can to meet the strong demand for our vehicles."

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 3.1 percent in January for a total of 16,405 compared to 15,905 vehicles sold in January, 2011.

In January, best performing vehicles include the X3 SAV – officially on sale in the U.S. for one year - up 56.9 percent to 1,687 units; the 6 Series, up 392.8 percent to 409 units and the 7 Series, up 56.1 percent to 977 units.  One month before the premiere of the next generation BMW 3 Series, sales of the current model were up 16.2 percent to 6,698 units.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles
In January, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) increased 0.4 percent to 11,698 vehicles from the 11,650 vehicles sold in January 2011.

MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported sales of 3,334 automobiles in January, an increase of 21.2 percent from the 2,751 sold in January 2011.

impressive improvement over last january...especially since the wildly popular X3 and 5-series were brand new cars last jan.

yes, i'll help you understand...

when new models launch demand goes through the roof and then typically drops after the first few months. january of last year had brand new models like the 5-series. those models are still doing well a year later. impressive.

second, the 3-series is 40% of bmw sales (as you ALWAYS like to point out...though you don't know your numbers and say it's 75%). the new 3-series launches in FEBRUARY of this year. that means JANUARY was a close out month for old models. the last month of any model typically has VERY low sales.

with all that going on, it's AMAZING that they still had growth.

did that help, smart guy? if you disagree with my LOGIC, please do explain yourself rather than ranting.

Same is true for Audi and Mercedes...

A4+A5 equals over 50% of Audi's car sales, and same with the c class for MB.

bmwcs - I dont't think knowitall was comparing to Audi and Mercedes. He was just stating a fact. But since you brought it up, look at the gains Audi and Mercedes made compared to last January, 20% and 23% respectively.

wait till the new 3,and 6 gc are out..plus BMW delivered a lot of cars in Dec to clinch US sales crown. Growth rates should increase next month.

know: math is hard for you i understand. 6698 3-series sold out of 16405 vehicles. that's 40%. not 50%.

oh...and with that model being in it's last month, we should have seen a serious decline. but sales still rose. explain that please.

I think the economy is getting better, or at least, some people are feeling quite optimistic about it.

The Mini is doing great. I guess that's why they weren't willing to give a deal at all.

bmwcs: A4 sold less of 3,000 of more than 9,000 (in fact is like quarter of the sales). MB sold like 5,500 of more that 20,000 cars sold (again that looks like an a quarter to me). There is a fact in the case of BMW, is more likely cause the most popular car of them is the 3 series, the average for BMW is to sale a 1/3 or 1/2 of the whole production in 3 series. But in the case of all others is different, as C and A4 are not so popular as the 3. The 5 series is very nice to me but i have to face it, is not as popular as I thought I would buy one but the fact is that is not as good seller as they wish...

The only way Knowitalls original statement is true is if all SUV sales are subtracted.

BMW total CAR sales total almost 12K, the 3 series which consists of coupe, convertible, sedan, and wagon equal 56% of BMW CAR sales(excluding SUVs). The Audi A4, and the coupe/ convet version the A5 equal 3554 units which is 55% of their total US CAR sales for Audi(again subtracting SUV’s out).. Mercedes total car sales equal 12,493 (all SUV subtracted) of which the C class accounts for 6525 of the 12K which equals 52%. So for all 3 manufactures the 3,A4/5, and C count for over 50% of sales.

1 = 3.5%
5 = 27.19% or 30.6 %if you include the 6.
7 = 8.2%
Z4=1.7%

A3 =9.0%
A6=17.3% or 27.2% with the A7
A8=4.9%

E=32.79%
S=6.2%
Cls=4.6%

Mercedes clearly sells the most high end models, since it has not A3 or 1 series model in the us. BMW is in the middle, and Audi is just below that with the A3 equaling nearly 10% of CAR sales.

And yes I had a little extra time on my hands :)

Interesting ... I understand you but I think you are wrong..Why you did not include all the MB Passenger cars like slk sl cl SLS I think the SLK sold twice of the Z4 right ?.. were is the Audi TT the A5 and A7 and even the R8 and in BMW you miss the 6 (If you do the numbers again BMW will be Behind Audi). I agree to exclude the SUV and even the R class But all others deserve to be there and You will see different numbers. BMW Can do it a lot better but they need to kill the designer.

So here is an interesting tidbit. Mini sold 3334 vehicles in Janaury. People think that's fantastic. Fiat sold 1911 500's in Janaury. A lot of people think that sucks.So my question is this. How many models does Mini sell compared to Fiat? I can tell you that it is about 10 versus 2. Therefore is Mini really that successful in the month of January compared to Fiat? I would think the opposite to be true.

You still miss the SLS..ups may be BMW does not have any super car. Now , even with manipulated numbers the fact remains: Almost the half of the whole BMW sales are 3 series, A fact that does not apply to the C or A4. Is that bad ? not at all. that Place the 3 series as the most successful entry level car in the history of the cars in the same way as the S class is the undisputed King of that category. Most likely what bothers you is that in the popular world the BMW is not perceived as Luxury brand but an entry level brand. But Who cares about that? I do not, So I am planning to buy an M5 this year (If GOD allows me and my does not bother me, Wife is Spanish is Esposa= Handcuffs), I am an MB Fan but I'll take it any day over the E63 even If I hate the front of all current Bimmers.

Its blowing my mind that you can not comprehend this. Its a FACT that the C class, A4/A5, and 3 series all account for over 50% of their manufacutes CAR sales in the US. Have a calculator? Check yourself...numbers dont lie.

SLS accounts for .736% of Mercedes US car sales for the month of January...sorry I forgot that.

Numbers do not lie but definitely we are seeing from different perspective. I see the Whole Production Of Each Manufacturer Sales in US including ALL models even the trucks (SUVs). You do'nt.
