Only if he's preaching toward that crowd. There are lots of people in america that hate america, or view a foreign company that has facilities here just as good... or better.

I would like America to go back to the immigration laws that were on the books pre-1965 and make them RETROACTIVE so that everyone who has since arrived here, but who would not have been eligible to come here under the previous immigration laws, would have to go back to where they came from and take their children and grandchildren with them. The current system of legal immigration dates to 1965. It marked a radical break with previous policy and has led to profound demographic changes in America. But that's not how the law was seen when it was passed — at the height of the civil rights movement, at a time when ideals of freedom, democracy and equality had seized the nation. After Kennedy's assassination, Congress passed, and President Lyndon Johnson, signed the Immigration and Naturalization Act. It leveled the immigration playing field, giving a nearly equal shot to newcomers from every corner of the world. The ceremony was held at the foot of the symbolically powerful Statue of Liberty. Yet President Johnson tried to downplay the law's significance.

"This bill that we will sign today is not a revolutionary bill. It does not affect the lives of millions," Johnson said at the signing ceremony. "It will not reshape the structure of our daily lives or add importantly to either our wealth or our power."

Looking back, Johnson's statement is remarkable because it proved so wrong.

Nobody should be forced to use anything. There are plenty of independent tests and market forces that will help you determine what to car to buy. I prefer to have cars that are built in non-unionized plants.

Either consumers are buying foreign-made goods for objective reasons (better, cheaper, etc.) or subjective ones (status, cachet, etc.). Appealing to patriotism doesn't alter consumer behavior in either case, unless the consumer is part of an isolated culture and you can convince him that his well-being depends on it (think post-war Japan). It's not going to happen in the States.

Political candidates who assume the role of marketers deserve scorn, regardless of what they buy (or drive).

That's why buggy-whip manufacturers, wheelwrights, and horse-drawn coach builders are all a rarity now; they gave way to something better, the age of the motor car. Similarly, US auto makers tend to continue to struggle while foreign companies tend to design and build better cars.

In my anything but humble opinion, US auto makers either *can* be leaders, or the can't. The way to find out, is to stop throwing billions and billions of dollars at them when they're going bankrupt.
