The New Jetta Continually Fails To Impress The Press - So WHY Are The Sales Off The Charts?

The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI offers a step up from the compact sedan's base model, but a small step that's unlikely to satisfy VW's most-demanding drivers.

Jetta sales shot up 54.5% last year because VW slashed the car's price and dropped some features that had made it more expensive than leading compacts.

In marketing terms, this is known as giving the customers what they want. German buyers happily shell out big bucks for the Volkswagen badge. Most Americans prefer their VWs budget-priced.

Because the press are idiots who are more concern about specs and options on paper than their practicality and real-world usage.

Because there are a lot of badgewhores who eat up all the VW commercials, and do not care that there are better options available.

009, you seem like an honest guy, here is an article from ttac talking about the Passat's reliability

New car, new manufacturing facility, one should never buy the 1st m/y of a brand new car and expect flawless motoring. When BMW & MB started producing cars in the U.S, those vehicles had issues as well, for a few years...

what an idiot to say the GLI is just a marginal step up. Different transmission and engine, multi link suspension at rear, tighter handling, soft dash, it is a great vehicle for the price. Stop bashing VW because they are great cars period.

That is either proof Americans don't know anything about cars, since the last generation was better, or that americans wanted them but couldn't afford them until they de-contented them.

Because normal people don't care about suspensions and 0-60 times and care more about comfort, styling and image.

yeah but those same normal people are always saying how quick theur cars are or how well they handle, even people that own Impalas. I actually have a neighbor that thinks his Impala is faster than any other cars its size. Little does he know Toyta's Avalon beats it by 2 seconds 0-60 and makes about 50 more hp despite being .4 liters smaller (3.5 vs the Impalas 3.9l) and gets better economy. These newer VWs perform very well, but are not built as well interior wise as their predecessors, and that is my point.

The previous Passat and previous Jetta perhaps had tighter suspensions then these new versions. However they were very over priced to be competative.Magazine writers tend to rate performance as the #1 aspect of a review. Also these previous cars had slightly better grained plastics on the dash. Us buyers, look for size and usability. Both Passat and Jetta fill the bill here for the US consumer.
