City Ignores Petition To Remove Red Light Cameras For Budgetary Concerns
The city council in Port Lavaca, Texas voted unanimously last week to ignore the certified request from its residents to hold a public vote on whether the red light camera program should continue. After meeting behind closed doors, the council made the decision to side with Redflex Traffic Systems, the Australian company that operates the cameras. Redflex filed suit on March 4 to block the election, although the company disguised its involvement in papers filed with the Calhoun County court.

"The Texas Traffic Safety Coalition hereby brings this original petition for declaratory judgment against defendant the city of Port Lavaca and shows as follows," the lawsuit began. "Plaintiff Texas Traffic Safety Coalition (hereinafter 'TTSC') is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the state of Texas. TTSC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make the roads and intersections in the state of Texas safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians."

The only answer now is for Port Lavaca voters to vote out the camera supporters and replace them with people that will first respect the will of their citizens and second value improved traffic safety ahead of predatory camera ticket revenue. In almost every case, safer and longer yellow intervals reduce red light violations by more than ticket cameras, so the use of cameras is almost entirely about money, not safety.

I agree James. There should be an immediate referendum with voting in of a whole new council. If that is not an option, then the citizens should drag their feet in any and all dealings with the city, show up at all meetings and create a general impasse, and petition the government for eminent domain of all council members property to put in red-light camera grief counseling centers.

From what this brit has seen of the USA.

When it comes to issues on democracy or infringements on their liberies, american citizens are not "apathetic or lazy". If anything they are a good example of how citizens should rally together and change policy.

Compare that to the UK and Europe where we are slowly being turned into a Communist Block and other than in Greece, none of the ordinary folk are doing a damn thing.

I wish the Folk of Port Lavaca the very best of luck in their attempts to rid themselves of the growing Corporate Socialism that is endemic in Western Nations.

blazinboy are you from Texas? Do you know if the city council is made up of republicans or democrats? In all of the studies I have seen, and there are a lot, the numbers are usually pretty close with the majority support (if there is one) going to democrats. In other words, the numbers are usually pretty equal, but if there is a split, then it is usually a great portion of democrats who support cameras. If you factor in independent voters, then they take the top prize.

Sounds like a city desperate for revenue, much like many others... Perhaps they can focus on being more efficient and cutting costs
