Uncertainties are growing over the future of Toyota Motor Corp., which had appeared to be on track to become the world's top automaker.

A scandal over vehicle defects in Japan and a sexual harassment suit against the former president of the U.S. subsidiary could undermine consumer trust.

General Motors Corp., with which Toyota has long had an alliance, is considering a tie-up with a coalition of Nissan Motor Co. and Renault S.A.

If GM forms a partnership with the Nissan-Renault duo, Toyota may have to review strategies for the important North American market.
