Should The Next Gen Corvette Keep Up With The Times And Adopt A V6?

Should The Next Gen Corvette Keep Up With The Times And Adopt A V6?
The Corvette faithful are adamant that Chevrolet needs to stick with some kind of V8 engine that’s powered their favorite sports car since the 1955 model.

But Edmunds Inside Line reports that General Motors built 500,000 fewer V8 engines in 2011 than it did five years earlier in 2006.

While some of that decline can no doubt be blamed on reduced sales amidst the economic slowdown, some of it can also be attributed to the drop in fullsize pickup and SUV sales and the current trend of engine downsizing in response to exploding gas prices.

No, it needs to keep the big V8. That is signature just like the transverse leaf spring. Those two thing make the car what it is. Thats like asking BMW to go FWD with its 3 series.

An example of a bad analogy would be to compare a stiffly sprung, short wheelbase sub-compact car to one built on a "medium" size, moderately sprung car: regardless of drivetrain orientation.

Why not compare a Vespa to a 996 . . . ?

@ Badgewhore2

The Corvette started with a straight 6, not a V. It also had a 2 speed automatic (Powerglide). I don't remember any V engine with less than 8 cylinders before the mid/late 60s, at least in an American made car.

offer both engines and let both be powerful and let the sales #'s show where the demand is.. if ford can do it with the mustang i dont see why chevy cant do it with the vette.
this would also help not piss off the loyal vette buyers and ease the idea into the public minds..

If i want a V6, I'd get a GT-R.
If I want a V8, I'd get a Corvette.

If I wanted a V-8, I would go for the Mclaren.

I'd pick the Ferrari 458 over the Mclaren if i had an extra 100k

Using the practically the same engine that goes into many Silverados, Tahoes and others keeps the price down for the Corvette. Possible new engine options for the Corvette make for fun speculation but the next Corvette is most likely using a DI 5.5 liter V8. Probably delivering the same in not a little more (450) horsepower as the current 6.2 liter small block. With various chassis and mechanical improvements the performance should once again be very similar to the 911 S.

What a stupid question. Should the AMG get rid of the V12? Why is the R8 still a V10?? Oh, while we're at it, what's Ferrari thinking building more V8 engines?

What the hell question is this??

the Corvette V8 isn't SOHC, it's a pushrod.

Gov't Motors should put in an algea burner and drive it with steam. The liar in chief odumbo will use an executive order to make it happen. He doesn't want any of you Republicans burning gasoline anymore while driving around. And quit all that farting, too.

Yes a twin turbo V6 would be a great base engine with the V8 as an option. Like the old small block big block option. Where do all these stupid comments come from???
