What Is The REAL Reason Why SO Many Kids Today Could Care Less About Cars?
This NY Times article talks about how GM is using MTV to try to figure out how to get kids excited about cars again.

It makes many assumptions of why kids aren't into cars like in previous generations but do you think they are right?

Or do you think there are other reasons?

Here are some key quotes and you can read the entire article by clicking the 'read article' link.

"His team are trying to help General Motors solve one of the most vexing problems facing the car industry: many young consumers today just do not care that much about cars."

“They think of a car as a giant bummer,” said Mr. Martin. “Think about your dashboard. It’s filled with nothing but bad news.”

"Automakers are realizing that if they do not adjust to changing youth tastes, they “risk becoming the dad at the middle school dance,”

“There’s been a lot of pessimism in the auto industry towards this generation,”

"After installing “secret shoppers” at select nationwide Chevrolet dealerships, Scratch recommended that salespeople abandon the hard sell and that the traditional system, based on commissions, be reimagined. Young buyers, they realized, are used to the Apple store, where salespeople do not push products."

Millenials have different values that Baby Boomers. Boomers were eager to leave home and be independent. That means their own place, and their own transportation.

Today, you have twenty-somethings living with their parents. That means mom 'n dad pays their childrens' way, provide room and board, and lend their car to their kids, or even buy one for their kids. Under these conditions, who needs independence, a good income, or to buy a car of their own?

Maybe they are too depressed about all those student loans they have to pay off for that college degree in history that got them a job at Applebees.

Simple Really

Very few vehicles today have any soul/ character.

Yes they are faster, safer, quieter, more tech laden; but they are also heavier and soulless.

My 1st vehicle was a Mk1 Golf GTI cab and that vehicle had more character than even the Golf R of Today.

Hardly. Perhaps your definition of cars with soul are different than all those people participating in car forums, attending car shows, events, races, etc, etc.

I would rather today's cars than yesterday's.

By lacking a soul/character I95 may mean lacking involvement on the driver's part. That involvement could be positive or negative in perception. In reality modern cars are easy to drive, do not require much maintenance, and most are really boring.

Being connected to friends used to be needing a car to go an hang out, where often the "going" was a major part of socializing. Today, all that has been replaced by smartphones, Facebook, and Twitter. Sad.

I refuse to let my kids be brainwashed by stupid liberal network trash, have TVs in their rooms, own smartphones and even have a FB or Twitter account. There is hope.

I think what you mean is Couldn't care less. Could care less means they could actually care less.

It’s because the cars that they have to choose from (mostly Toyotas) aren't really anything worth desiring.

Kids ARE into cars, they're just NOT into GM cars. So this is why GM is trying to get them like THEIR cars, and not cars in general!!

Because of their addiction and obsession with drugs, marijuana and juvenile desire for immediate gratification.

The large expense of a car and the time required to work/save up for the cost, does not hold their attention long enough to justify the larger cost. Games, gadgets and toys are their speed now.

The immense popularity of the ZipCar and its ilk says it all... cars have become nothing more than a convenience, they're interchangeable modes of transportation. Choosing a ZipCar instead of your own car that you can wash/personalize/hotrod tells me that kids would rather personalize their smartphone/tablet/website/blog than spend that same time focused on their car. Remember, there's only 24 hours in a day, if you spend your spare time personalizing your Facebook/blog/tweets, where's the time for your car? I grew up in the 80's when high school boys were still spending a whole lot of time modding their cars and then "cruising" around in it. Well, I see high school and college kids today rush him to hit Facebook/internet, which means less time for the car.

001, "could care less" means you care about something.

"Could not care less" means you don't care. Big difference.

I do not think the drop is as big as stated, though involvement with cars are much less because it is definitely a combination of what everyone said.

Yes, they no longer need cars to "go see" their friends.

Yes, the word socialize has a different meaning, which no longer requires you to go to a friends' house to play games because everyone is connected via social networks and gaming stations with internet access.

Yes, cars (within reach of high school and college kids) are becoming boring because they are less involving, and by that, I mean they require less maintenance, less driver participation, less interative than older cars.

Yes, kids are feeling that it has become not worth while to drive because it has simply become too expensive to drive.

And finally, my own opinion is that cars are just a mode of transportation, though I still believe there are lots of kids out there who are still fascinated by cars.

Oh, I forgot, Yes, GM makes boring cars...
