Searching for more E85: A kernel of truth about flex fuels: Gas stations with corn fuel still rare

My first experience in filling up a flexible-fuel vehicle was a complicated exercise that involved an Internet search, some ridicule from my husband, a 20-minute ride that took me past five gas stations and an $86 charge on my American Express card.

It was the most I'd ever spent in my life on refueling a vehicle -- $3.75 a gallon for E85 here on July 11 -- which I found upsetting.

From President Bush on down support has intensified for the home-grown alternative so we can curb our addiction to guzzling oil supplied from overseas. The fuel, consisting of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, also burns cleaner, emits less carbon dioxide and does not noticeably affect engine performance.

Toughy- Chewy is correct Ethanol is unsustainable. It takes more energy and petrochemical products to make corn than it can give back. A losing proposition. Hybrid are turning into the same. Yes under controlled conditions they can produce excellent mileage, however in the real world the fall short by a large margin.
