That is good, but Audi has the baddest diesel as of right now.

chewy - you're forgetting one other engine. VW's V10 TDI.

Offered in both the Phaeton and the Touareg.

The Audi V8 makes more hp, the VW V10 makes more torque. The V8 is a newer unit that overall is a better diesel.

Who really cares about performance in these cars I must ask?

When I shop for an SUV, the last thing on my mind is 0-60 etc. The GL420 CDI has enough horsepower and torque to suit most people. I'd be happy with one, even if it has 23345-hp less than this or that...

I was just mentioning other options.

Nope. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Volkswagen, Renault, Citroen, Peugeot, Alfa Romeo... they all have GOOD diesels. ;-)

Ok, we will find out who has the best diesels when they get here. They are all good, much better than we can imagine here in the states. But who has the best we don't know yet.

To me, it doesn't matter "who has the best". You can try and look at it this way.

In this class, every carmaker offers a good diesel: doesn't matter if it is from Munich, Stuttgart or Ingolstadt, they're all good. More power or torque doesn't mean that the engine is better than their competitors. I won't go into a long explanatation, but in this class, they're all good. ;)

A GL420 CDI is a nice truck, I really like the G-Class-similar design, but I think I'd go for the Audi Q7 with the 6-cylinder TDI engine.

BMW530i,

I'll put it this way. EUROPEAN diesels are the best. :D

btw, nice username :]
I drive a 2005 530i and a 2006 a4 3.2

Thanks. :)

Europeans make good diesels. Always enjoy a good oil-burning rental over on the Old Continent when I am there.

My BMW is a 2001 E39 530i BTW.

We need the better diesels in the US. I actually would like to see what an Diesel Hybrid could do. Bring over the Euro diesels.

BMW530i,

No problem :]

America should have more of the European Diesels. The diesels that are available right now arn't good enough.
and they need to bring the cost of diesel down too!

The 1997-2003 5 series was my favorite. I still think your 2001 5 is better looking than my 2006. I loved the styling for some reason

I too loved the E39. It's a very conservative body style with a hue of sportiness to it. Sometimes, I look at it and think to myself that I see a majestic-look in it somehow. Great car. My wife and son love it too!

I cannot stand the E60 5-Series from a design point of view. I've testdriven it and found it to be better than mine from a sporty driving POV, but the design just didn't attract me. No offense. ;)

BTW, I've driven a lot of European diesels since I am always going to Europe for business purposes. They're all excellent, we don't know what we're missing out on!

When I first saw the E60 5 series, I thought it looked like a pontiac. But it somehow grew on me. I still dont like the styling as much as the E39 but it is decent enough. I personally bought it because of its performance. If it wasnt for the performance i probably would have bought the A6.

I've never driven a European diesel yet, but i have heard GREAT things about them. If the next generation X5 comes in diesel, im getting one :]
