POLL: We Know Hybrid Owners Aren't Repeat Buyers, But What About Diesel Owners?

POLL: We Know Hybrid Owners Aren't Repeat Buyers, But What About Diesel Owners?
Last week we published a study by R.I. Polk revealing that most hybrid owners would not purchase another  hybrid vehicle the next time around.

One reason might be is that the owners found, even with more expensive gasoline, it would take years to pay back the extra cost of the vehicle.

While diesels might not be quite as expensive to purchase outright, there is no arguing the extra cost of fuel in the long term equation might be a significant factor for some.  So we wanted to conduct our own non-scientific survey to see if current diesel owners fall into the same opinion group.

If you are currently a diesel owner, please take our poll and tell us if you are going to be a repeat diesel buyer.

Yes, simply because Diesels offer something Hybrids do not, the fun to drive factor.

Torque happy Benz have alaways been my favorite.

Oh wow. The Infiniti M hybrid is faster than a diesel Benz. Wow. Let me buy the Infiniti because it's faster!

There's more to cars than speed and acceleration. I'll take the E class over the Infiniti M anytime because it looks better IMO and is more comfortable overall.

I do find it funny when people keep bringing up this Hybrid / Diesel question.

In Europe / UK there is NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that the diesels are a much better option than Petrol/Electric Hybrids.

It is only when you learn that the best of the diesel engines are not available to the USA Market that you begin to understand the ignorant comments.

I guess those who manage to make it over to this side of the pond will find out there are better options to their beloved PRIUS.

Indeed you may have “Fun” with some diesel or hybrid. Rather than fun, is fuel economy the most prevalent choice criteria. At his time diesel is more expensive than gasoline in the U.S., in Europe Diesel is cheaper than gasoline. In Europe about 50% of vehicles are diesel, in France up to 70%. According to the Energy Information Administration, since 2004, diesel has generally cost more than gasoline in the U.S. In the U.S., gasoline and diesel are dirt cheap compared to their cost in Europe. Hybrid vehicles represent just 2.4% of the overall new vehicle market in the U.S., outside the large pickup truck segment, around one percent of U.S. cars are diesels, and that total diesel market share is expected to be around 4.5%.

There must be a special school were idiots like you go to learn stupidity.

I and others have told you morons numerous times that DIESEL COST MORE THAN PETROL IN EUROPE !!!

How difficult is it to do some basic research before typing some rubbish, hell, if you are not sure, just don't type it in the first place.

Current Pump Prices in UK

£1.40 Per Litre Petrol
£1.49 Per Litre Diesel

BMW 535d M-Sport costs more than the 535i M-Sport. (£4,000 more)
BMW 320d Sport costs more than the 320i Sport (£3,000 more)

So i guess all the people in the UK and Europe ( Over 500 million of them) somehow are all deluded in buying a vehicle that costs more at purchase, and costs more to fuel rather than KNOWING that the mileage benefits more than offset the higher purchase cost and higher pump prices.

Sometimes you people should just take a few seconds to think before typing.

I'll just trim all the unnecessary hate from the above comment.
End result: "Actually, diesel is more expensive than gas in Europe, with diesel at 1.49 euros per litre and petrol at 1.40 euros per litre. But even so, a diesel car's superior fuel economy makes it less expensive than a petrol version in the long term, even if its sticker price is larger."
That's better.
Speedingtickets, why exactly are you so constantly enraged?

I've owned diesel in the past, and as soon as I can get one in a model I want I will have another. Bring the Tiguan, or build the Cross Coupe concept. If the Cruize diesel actually arrives, I'll look at it. But I have really been spoiled with my current (gas) Tiguan. I like the higher seating position and it's roomy enough for my needs.

My daughter has an 09 Jetta TDI and an 09 gas Jetta wagon. When their finances are a little better, the wagon gets traded for a TDI.

What I want to know: why hasn't VW used the V12 diesel engine in more than one car?! Put it in the R8 and the Panamera already!

My wife loved her '08 ML320 CDI and got around 23 mpg overall and 26-28 mpg on the road. Aside from the mileage, she loved the torque and acceleration of her ML. She had a new ML diesel on order when she had a change of mind and decided on a sedan. Sadly, the E-class diesel doesn't come in 4matic (which is necessary living in the mountains near a ski area) so she settled with the gas model.
In spite of diesel being more than unleaded the additional fuel mileage more than offset the cost and made it more cost effective than the gas ML. Her new E350 4matic with direct injection is getting nearly the same fuel mileage as her ML320.
To answer the question, no doubt she would have replaced her diesel with another diesel had it been available in AWD.
