Dear BMW,

German Taxi drivers never complain about their naming structure...

Sincerely,

People who imply that Mercedes and BMWs are basic transportation and only fit to be taxis are fools.

@pchera01, I'm not actually sure what your point was but yes, I agree, Benz's are used extensively as taxis in Europe. From what I saw when I was over there with the Army there are more Benz taxis than any other brand. So... congrats, I guess?

So I'm fine with what letters they are, but what about returning numbers to their accurate engine sizes?

Exactly Jeff! I remember when a BMW said 325i it meant a 2.5l and a mercedes 300e had a 3.0l

I wanted this as well, but in some cases, the actual engine has been downsized from previous versions a vehicle model. I guess it was OK when mostly naturally-aspirated engines were mostly used. Now, many of the new engines have smaller displacements for consumption & are turbo'd for increased HP & torque. The alphanumeric naming schemes will never be perfect --- as long as the make sense half the time, they'll be OK.

It matters NOTHING to consumers (or enthusiasts). I've yet to meet anybody who's based their car buying decision on the car's naming scheme. It as far on the bottom of the list as the color of the spark plug.

That was almost as confusing to look at as a 5 series GT...
