Cough! What?! The Volt is an EREV, by definition it has an EV mode. The mode they are introducing is kind of the opposite, called Hold Charge, forcing the car to use the generator and hold the battery charge for use at a later time. Say you drive a long distance and at the end you a have some city stop/go traffic. You can use the Hold Charge mode while on the highway and then switch back to Normal (EV mode!) for the remaining stop/go portion.

The Opel/Vauxhall Ampera already has that. It is uncertain whether GM will software update the 2011 and 2012 Volts to support this (probably unlikely).
