Demand for better products puts Ford, GM on right track

To consider the carnage at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. today -- the tens of thousands of hourly jobs gone or going, the plants closed or closing, the fear that neither can turn around sales, Bill Ford's vow to accelerate his North American restructuring -- it would be understandable to answer with an emphatic "No!"

But could the prod of declining sales, of not having enough of the right products for uncertain times, of walking on the edge of the financial abyss be the force for change that GM and Ford need to shake the insular lethargy and residual arrogance from their executive ranks, work force and worldview?

What will become of our American automakers. I know that they need to wake up and build better products, but I hope they dont go down the tube to learn that lesson. I still dont think its good on our economy to see Ford/GM go down.
