Don't Say We Didn't Warn You: La Hood Demands Nation Wide Cell Phone Ban For ALL Drivers

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called on Thursday for a federal law to ban talking on a cell phone or texting while driving any type of vehicle on any road in the country.

Tough federal legislation is the only way to deal with what he called a "national epidemic," he said at a distracted-driving summit in San Antonio, Texas, that drew doctors, advocates and government officials.

LaHood said, however, he was not as concerned about people who eat, apply makeup, or perform other distracting activities in cars because "not everyone does that."

Talking on a cell phone IS distracting, as is texting. No contest.

But so is daydreaming, talking with someone in the car, looking at a paper map to find your way, finding the CD you want to pop into your dash, listening to talk radio, or even thinking about the problems waiting for you at the office during your morning commute. Try to legislate that out of existence.

They will by demanding self driving cars. The writing is on the wall.

Then what happens when you crash because of a software glitch?

Agent009: I'm still waiting for the personal VTOL airplains that everyone was supposed to have by the turn of the century. At least that was the talk in the 1970s. And yes, I'm aware of test beds like the Google self-driving car.

Don't hold your breath for it, son ;-) (in my best "old man" voice)

Eating and drinking while driving should also be banned. Cup holders are only fitted in cars to please the American market, in Europe if you want to eat or drink you stop. Having said that, it is far easier on motorways, autobahns and autostradas in Europe to pull into a service areas equipped with rest rooms shops, gas stations and restaurants that are adjacent, no need to turn off and find somewhere. In most places you drive less than 50 miles between service areas.
With all the vacant land I see beside freeways here, there is a great opportunity just waiting. - Wish I had the money to do it!
