IF YOU Were Buying A Car Today, Would YOU Get A STICK Or A Dual-Clutch Tranny?
After years of a dwindling acceptance of standard transmissions, it seems like Americans are going back to the world of manual gearboxes.

But the REAL question we want to know is: Would YOU want a manual transmission or a dual-clutch transmission?

The real reason I want to ask is because I've had a hypothesis for the past 12 months that stipulates the enthusiast is a dwindling minority; however, if you were to look at the recent data, it seems that Q1 of 2012 is painting a different picture.

Even MORE interesting is that many of today's standard transmissions are less efficient than autoboxes after years of the manual reigning supreme.

This is what we know, right off the bat:

MANUAL transmissions are more fun and engaging. Definitely a plus for the enthusiast; however, not so much fun when you're stuck in an urban traffic jam.

DUAL-CLUTCH boxes are the fastest way to shift. Definitely something you NEED on the track nowandays; however, they do take away from that engaging driving experience that so many gearheads adore.

That said, WHICH transmission would YOU get if you were in the market for a car TODAY?

Americans have a growing crush on manual transmissions.

To be sure, the percentage of new vehicles with stick-shift gearboxes remains a small slice of the new vehicle market, because most of today's models don't even offer manuals.

But the first quarter this year manuals were in 6.5% of new vehicles sold, and that's getting close to double each of the past five years. It's also highest since 7.2% in 2006, according to Edmunds.com.

If enthusiasts are declining, I'll take your word for it, then sticks may be mostly due to economic pressures. They are, after all, cheaper.

If I'm buying a track car, then definitely a dual clutch transmission. For my daily driver, I'm sticking with a manual. Manuals, especially ones with heavy clutches can be a pain, but usually cars with heavy clutches have great power.

Auto companies would rather sell a dual clutch because it raises the base price of the car and they usually require more maintenance.

More maintenance = more money to the dealer

I'm with MorePower. DCT for the track, 6MT for my DD. But since I can't afford a dedicated track car, 6MT it is for me.

Depends on the size of the vehicle: The GTI is a stick the CC is a DSG.

After 20+ years of driving a stick, i recently got a DCT so my wife could drive the car as well. Even siting in traffic on 95 in CT, I regret the decision. I find manuals are much better even in stop and go, it's easier to moderate your speed with the ebb and flow of traffic and keep the proper distance between cars.

I just had major knee surgery (ruptured quadricep tendon and torn MCL). So, the rest of my life I will have to go with a dual clutch. I had to trade in my stick shift 335i because even 3 months after surgery, I cannot fully bend my knee. Luckily I had equity and got in to a sport auto 335i.
So, stick shifts will be retired just in case I have to have knee surgery again in the future.

I like them both for different reasons, stop and go traffic is a pain in a stick, other than that I prefer a stick, the autos can occasionally out shine a stick in off road situations like hill climbs in deep sand or snow, I could go either way.

Dual-clutch trannies are amazing, but nothing beats a stick. Unless you are stuck in traffic commuting to werk every freakin' day and your left knee has pretty much had it.

Of course EVs don't have a multigear tranny so I've gone with that :p

HA! Picked up my 135i last Friday with a MANUAL. I drove the DCT but for everyone's saftey I need to hit second "downshift" when I AM READY. Best of all no tranny rebuilds in 20 years of BMR's!

Only people like the dolt odumbo drive sissy automatics of any kind cause they can't figure out how to get their left foot to operate at the same time as the right side of their brain.

They probably double wrap their weenie so no feelings get through like driving an automatic.
