If Toyota Were To Resurrect The Supra, Would That Be AWESOME or AWFUL?
So, what's the deal already?

If I didn't know any better I would say that Toyota Motor Sales is on its way to producing some of the most driver-focused products at the same time in my recent memory.

THINK: The Lexus IS-F, LFA, GS and the rest of the F-Sport bits and baubles. Then you have the Scion FR-S, which already has won over some auto critics. The only brand out of the lineup that's missing a sporting product seems to be Toyota. No, the current-gen Camry doesn't count as "driver focused."

And when you think about TMS' move to make the GT86 a Scion product, it seems as though it purposely left a gap for a reason.

Could the reason be the reincarnation of the infamous Toyota Supra?

Though the product has been one of those on/off again type of things -- much like my last relationship -- rumors are giving it a jolt to life, again.

According to CAR Magazine and Motor Trend are proclaiming the project is back "on."

As you'd expect, there's no official stance on the matter, yet.

That said, are you rooting for an all-new Supra to make a production appearance or could you care less?

Off course it's going to be awesome. And would it be Awful? What kind of Stupid question is that? 00R, do me and everyone up here a favor and google and learn about the legendary Toyota Supra. I use refer friend to autospies but I have Not done so in the past 12 months because of bias articles like this.

Here's what you're missing, chief.

Sure it WOULD be awesome IF Toyota were to build it in the old fashion; however, there's talk that it could use other tech, namely hybrid or electric components.

There's no guarantee it'll be the Supra of yore.

That's the catch.

What's wrong with an eSupra similar to a Tesla Roadster but larger (2+2 coupe)? Instant torque, no time and complexity wasted in gears, and 0-60 in sub 4 seconds is nothing to frown upon. With Tesla already licensing the electric drive-train to build the second gen. RAV4 EVs this would be really cool.

It needs to exceed the GTR performance wise and not be a 370z competitor.

For $60k and the numbers they're talking about it would be more of a Porsche Cayman/Corvette Grand Sport competitor.

Definitely NOT at the level of a GT-R, that's for sure.

Exceed the GTR performance wise?

Then what would be the point of a 350k LF-A?

If Toyota made a Supra, it would be NOT be awesome because it needs to be affordable! As much as I would love to see a Supra vs Z vs New RX-7 battle, like it was in the 90s, IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

Like I've said before, if Toyota revives the Supra name, it will be on a turbo/forced-induction hybrid version of the FRS under the Toyota brand.

Would you rather not have the revived Supra available? I don't understand your point at all. The FRS is "affordable", but Toyota does not have a car to take on the Z - so why not create a Supra that's LESS than $60,000? Just because you can't afford it doesn't make it any less awesome. Does that mean Porsches and BWM's aren't awesome?

Why would it not be awesome?

The Supra would need to have merits on its own. Toyota with its size should be able to make it relatively affordable. It should be a sports car, not a muscle car, and it should be more refined than a Z.

The problem with the whole segment is there's virtually no place where we can enjoy these cars without breaking the law.

Idiotic post. Obviously it would be good, and possibly awesome. My view is they should focus on the $50-60k range and not go to $100k and compete with the GTR. The LFA, while much more than that, is Toyota's halo, and what Toyota needs is a strong performer in a range that is accessable.

Why the $50-60k mark? Why not $40k?

all price points have tough competition, bet 40-70k there are loads of amazing cars, mustang, evo, STI, corvette, S5, C63, M3,cts-V
A supra would just make it more exciting and probably steal some sales ...

interesting that Toyota has stayed out of the sports car market since the demise of the celica (i dont count that pitiful mr2)and now enter with the FRS and possibly the Supra in one year. Wonder what changed the execs minds.
