Car And Driver: 2013 Audi S6 Goes 0-60 MPH In Just 3.7 Seconds!!
The new V-8 emits a menacing growl, but doesn't quite match up to the raging V-10. On the plus side, the new engine is not only a bit more torquey but also more efficient—by a whopping 25 percent, according to Audi. It’s also much quicker. With launch control engaged, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph takes a mere 3.7 seconds, which is all the more impressive considering the engine’s modest output; the last S6 needed 5.4 seconds to do the same deed. Top speed on the new car is limited to 155 mph, although we’re told the car would be capable of close to 190 if left ungoverned.

This is great news for Audi's upcoming RS6. Not only will the RS6 be much more powerful than the S6, but senior Audi engineers have admitted the previous RS6 was good for little more than straight-line acceleration. To turn the upcoming RS6 into a dance partner the Audi team is going to make the new RS6 more engaging, dynamic, and lighter than the previous generation.

different cars. S7 competes with the CLS and 640i gran coupe and will be priced accordingly. the S6 is certainly an impressive machine but the looks are incredibly pedestrian.

The A6 with Quattro is lighter than the Rear Drive 5-Series.

How do you expect an AWD 5-Series to be lighter than the A6 ?

the A6 3.0T weighs more than a 535i, less than a 535i xDrive.

The 550i is enough slower than the S6 so I wouldn't call it similar.

The S6 is impressively quick from a stop but it's all the launch. The M5 traps 7mph higher, which is huge, gets from 0-100 almost a second quicker, and is significantly quicker from any acceleration test that starts while moving. It also pulls .95g on the skidpad vs .87, slaloms faster, etc.

You could slap a set of drag tires on a Mustang and match the 0-60 times of these cars. That doesn't make them competitors, and the S6 isn't an M5 competitor unless all you care about is stoplight racing. That's where the RS6 comes in. My guess is the RS6, which IS an M5 competitor, won't be much quicker than the S6 from 0-60, but will be closer in terms of overall performance to the M5.

I will say this, though -- BMW needs to program in a launch control function to ALL their Steptronic equipped cars. As power levels keep increasing it makes no sense that they don't implement the feature, especially when their competitors do (hello Benz, Porsche, and Audi), and without it they're going to keep getting trounced in 0-60 times. The DCT's already have it. The 8-speed Steptronics, which most of their cars have, need it. I'd love to see a comparison between the S6, E550 4MATIC, and an M Sport 550i xDrive (especially the upcoming 450hp/480lb-ft version) with the 8-speed sport Steptronic, active roll stabilization, adaptive suspension, and launch control. That'd be a heck of a read. Now if BMW would just add the feature...

It’s funny how people put so much weight on 0 to 60 times.

While yes the AWD S6 with launch control can hit 60 in the same amount of time as the RWD M5. The M5 will hit 100mph nearly a full second faster than the S6 from a standstill, is 7mph faster in the quarter mile, and hits 130mph over 2.5 seconds quicker...In short it’s no comparison. Totally different leagues..And in any kind of rolling acceleration (elasticity) tests the M5 would eat the S6 up all day long. On a race track the difference would be even greater. The M5s rear suspension is bolted directly to the frame creating super stiff structure suited to track use. Allowing the M5 to lap the ring faster than a Panamera Turbo.

And the kicker with the M5 is its two cars in one. The most luxurious 5 series, with a cushy supple ride one minute, and a sedan with supercar performance at the push of a button.

If you acutely look at the S6's 5-60mph time of 4.9 seconds, it probably gives you a clearer indication of the engines pulling power. While The S6 hitting 60 in 3.7 with launch control is impressive, and makes for a nice head line. It in no way suggests it’s a bargain M5, or even in the same league.

Performance wise the S6 is above the 550i but below the M5, just as Audi has planned it. Whichever way you look at it the S6 numbers are extremely solid and the RS6 will be even better.

Judging by the copious amounts of deboosting, I would say this article has BMW fans in a tizzy.

So when Nissan release the Nissan GT-R with a launch control everyone was saying how it cheated and not good. But since a German are beginning to copy Nissan with the launch control, suddenly it's the greatest invention since bread was invented. IMAO.......

And even with a launch control I find it hard to belief it did 0-60 in 3.7s. That Ferrari, Lambo, and Nissan GT-R territory (actually the Nissan GT-R does 0-60 in 2.7-2.9s now.)

first of all, this is a much cheaper car than the GTR. and it's a sedan. and every other performance car has launch control these days. it's really about so much more than 0-60 anyway...

Any vehicle with sufficient power/torque and having AWD and launch control will have a good reasonable 0-60 MPH time statistic...its kind of a pointless variable when comparing overall performance to one in particular statistic. But just because they get to 60 faster doesn't mean there a better overall performer. The BMW M5 is a better track car hands down(facts)... the Audi S6 isn't... when it can lap a panamara turbo s or until the real track car comes out (RS6)this is a pointless comparison .But for the record the s6 is a fast car with those numbers and deserves some respect.
