DRIVEN: What Does A Lexus GS350 F-Sport Have To Do With A Mustang GT, 5-Series, M3, And LFA?
Well, a lot actually.

Jason Harper who pens for Bloomberg recently reviewed the Lexus GS350 F-Sport and had some intriguing insights about the car. He also had some stories to tell from his Lexus experience.

A couple of my personal favorite are competing with a Ford Mustang GT at a stop light and beating a BMW M3 coming out of a turn. Aside from the possible exaggeration or coincidence that both drivers were terrible, what Harper writes about the GS is actually important.

1) The vehicle now has an attitude and stands out amongst the crowd.

2) It is priced competitively when compared to a similarly equipped BMW 5-Series.

3) The interior has nice attention to detail.

4) It's not likely to STEAL away ALL 5-Series buyers; however, it is compelling enough for those consumers who appreciate comfort with a bit of panache.

When you consider the route of the new BMW 5-Series though, you have to think for a second. That MIGHT just be enough to get the Lexus GS some sales.

In the New York tri-state, the new GS is starting to get spotted just about everywhere. Very impressive signs for an all-new car.

Sneak attack! My Lexus GS350 F Sport sedan is nose to nose with a Mustang GT at a stoplight. The road before us scrolls up a mountain pass. The Ford driver guns it.

Halfway up the hill the driver glances over and finds me right next to him. I actually see his brow furrow. A bit later something similar happens when I beat a BMW M3 out of a deep C-shaped turn.

Sure, I've got something to prove. In most circumstances the GS350 with all-wheel-drive is not going to thump a M3. (Like I said, sneak attack.) But if the flesh is willing, so is this Lexus...

So the author writes that he kept up with a Mustang and beat an M3. Sounds to me that both the Mustang and M3 weren't even trying. There's no way a GS350 will hang with an M3 unless it's one of the older models.

This article is about the F-Sport. F-Sport has several exterior enhancements that the standard GS doesn't have. Jus Sayin.

I'm actually cutious to know what percentage of people buying this car would actually buy a GS350 with the F-Sport and shell out the extra $5,500 for it... Only if Toyota broke down its sales figures.

And I cannot wait to see the people who do buy this car pull up to a Mustang/M3/535i thinking they will smoke them and the GS ends up getting burned and the idiot in the Lexus wonders what happened...

Thierry, most of the GS' I've seen -- in fact I'd say 8/10 -- have the F-Sport package equipped.

It's sort of wonky because with that aggressive front end and large diameter wheels, you would THINK they'd make sure there was LESS wheel gap.

Looks like a 4x4.

I laugh at people who buy a mustang. A great car is not just about how fast it goes. You are so immature and ignorant.....

@bmwnomore... you are right, I cannot imagine GS owners doing that because their customer demographics will probably be 40-50 y/o white male, so I agree with you. But most IS owners are much more obnoxious (as is expected with the price point-target market)

@00R... I cannot honest say because truthfully, I have not seen many around. I would just prefer to see how the breakdown of sales would be.

@knowitall... agreed!

The GS with/without F sport is a very impressive car to drive - much more so than even a F10 5 series which is so irrelevant nowadays sadly. However, with a 60k-65k otd price tag, there are a wide range of selections at this point. For one, I can get a pretty fully loaded 535 Msport for less and a well-optioned 550 Msport, taking advantage of BMW's 2500 conquest rebate (if you don't have a BMW registered under your name), 1500 option credit, and 1000 owner loyalty (if you had BMW in your household) plus incredibly flexible pricing of the less-than-stellar-sales of 5 series. Also, at this price point, my heart is set on the Audi A6 prestige with S-line that offers the best all-around driving dynamics and performance, which is lacking in a 5series (550 msport is fast but wobbles alot even with active stabilization in an ill-attempt to defy the law of physics). Bear in mind, with increasingly aggressive promotional offers of BMWs starting this month (which usually peaks between October and early-January next year), the pricing of the GS is, simply put, a bit stiff. Nonetheless, if pricing is not a deciding factor in your purchase decision, then GS is a very nice, impressive vehicle is every aspect.

Another note though: any owner of BMW, or maybe all other European brand as well, knows how much it's gonna cost after warranty is up. If you factor that money and headache into the formula, you might want to take another look at Lexus, or Infiniti.

Oh please. That's one of those silly Internet myths that usually perpetuated by people who don't maintain their cars properly or cheap out on maintenance.

My family has been driving Mercedes' for decades and all of the newer ones we've owned have never given us any problems after their warranty ran out. We drove those cars upwards of 200,000 km and kept them for 10 years. No reliability issues whatsoever. I'm talking about a 2002 W210 E320 Sport and my dad's current 2010 E350 CGI, which is racking up thousands of kilometers per week as my parents are driving across Europe from country to country.

The warranty on my 2007 BMW 118i runs out this summer, and I am not the least bit worried.

My statement is no myth, it's based on my ex's 2003 325. She went to dealer for maintenance and doesn't even drive much. There's always something broken out of nowhere that costs her $2000/yr after warranty is up.

I drive my G35 like a rally car. After 80000 miles only one seat control button gone sour. Your call.
