Breaking News: Almost 5000 cars to sink on Freighter near Alaska

A ship with 22 people on board was listing severely Monday and taking on water south of the Aleutian Islands, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

A coast guard plane circling over the Cougar Ace dropped a life raft Monday morning, Chief Petty Officer Darrell Wilson said. Coast Guard helicopters have been dispatched to aid in the rescue and all crew members are wearing survival suits.

A merchant marine ship also arrived at the scene, and that vessel's crew was trying to rig a line on the Cougar Ace to keep it from tilting any further, officials said. Plans also were underway to get a hold of the life raft, which landed some way from the Cougar Ace, Petty Officer Thomas McKenzie said.

The 200-metre car carrier was at an 80 degree angle to the water Monday morning and appeared to be leaking oil.
