Possibly The Most Expensive Scion Yet? Dealer Tacks On A $7K Premium On New FR-S
The Scion FR-S has just started hitting the sales floor in numbers and the dealers are coming out of the wood work marking up the the little coupe.

OK, we knew that there would be some of this, but placing an almost $7,000 premium on a car that lists for only $27,000 to begin with is a little steep.  So is the dealer in the right to place such a hefty premium of such an inexpensive vehicle, or should he try to get every penny he can, while he can?

I was under the impression that dealers were not allowed to mark up Scions over MSRP?

Toyota won't give extra cars to dealers who do this.....

I always hate the tone of the articles. I think it is facinating to see what commands a dealer markup, but why demonize the dealer or buyer. This is the great thing about a free market. No one is forcing to buy or sell. It is free will.

BTW - I personally would not pay such a high markup for a car I can get under MSRP in a few months, but good for the dealer if they can find someone who will.

Why can't a dealership mark it up? Even people in the dealership are human beings who need to bring food to the table and have their responsibilities to fulfill. At 30,000 mark, this car is still a rather fun, affordable sports car. Even with the mark up, American consumers are still paying a lot less than people who pay twice or three times the price in other parts of the world.

Well, stop complaining and don't buy it. Just let other people have some enjoyment in delivering the tofu.

As much as I like this car and the well reviews it has gotten so far but I think this Pure GREED at it best. For that price I go and get a Nissan 370Z instead or you could wait 2 years and get a use one.

And people wonder "Why" everyone hate the car dealership and their car sales men and women.

Imagine the premium most of 1M drivers pay for their cars (e.g., 10000 to 30000 over msrp) and the premium Porsche cars command for a bare bone stripper. Obviously, you are no enthusiast. You are just an average joe looking for something equivalent to a genuine brand (e.g., VW or Toyota or Lexus or whichever fits your number crunching) to a "lesser" extent, in which case you have no brand loyalty - not a badge whore - and have no appreciation for the engineer efforts invested in the design and production of a particular vehicle. Anyone can drive a 370z with a lead foot or a barbell strapped to their calf. But if it is marked up by 100 bucks over msrp, would you still get it? In my opinion, 86 is far more superior to the 370 in terms of overall package (e.g., boxer engine, much more flexible chassis, and nimbleness), which I thought in your other posting is very comparable to a Cayman for half the price. In this case, badge whores have my respect over the whiners who have no appreciation for the history and heritage this car reflects.

86 far superior to 370Z? And yet a 370Z will destroy a 86 on a race track.

Correction: VW-Porsche if it needs to be more specific.

Yeah, but the Nissan 370Z has the heritage to back it up and has proven itself time after time. This car need still need to prove itself in the long term.

Don't get me wrong it's an awesome at least what I read from professional reviewers. If it's my money I would good with the Nissan 370Z for that kind of money.

And unlike the Nissan 370Z which beat the BMW 1 Series and Porsche Cayman S in both 0-60, 1/4 miles and on the track comparison. I seriously doubt this car can touch the Nissan 370Z in that department. It's still a great sports car but the Nissan 370Z is still a better choice for that kind of money. Each his own I guess.

It's absurd to try to compare the underpowered FR-S to the 370z. The 370z remains one of the most underrated sports cars out there.

Pushing the price paid for an FR-S does little to endear potential buyers who will just look instead at a better Nissan or Mazda.

Seems like a extreme markup, I could see $2k markup... I ask markup on the cars I sell too...

If you can get this car for MSRP it is a good "investment." I bought a MINI Cooper when they were hot and essentially drove it for free for nearly 3 years before selling privately. But--YMMV.

Putting a "market adjustment" premium on a car demonstrates the complete contempt and disrespect a dealer has for his customers.

To that I suggest that people walk away from such corrupt dealers. They are SNEERING at customers and see them as VICTIMS to be plucked clean.
