The All New Fully Digital Dash Display On The 2013 BMW 7-Series. Will It Be A TURN ON Or TURN OFF For The BMW Faithful?
We must admit we were kind of shocked when we saw the facelifted 2013 BMW 7-Series because we thought BMW would buck tradition and keep the combination traditional instrument display with a digital display for complimentary information like navigation turns, warning messages, etc., while companies like Jaguar, etc. would gamble on it to get an edge.

You all know I'm a former Apple guy and I LOVE technology.

But I also know there are certain lines you can cross with important brands that turn off the faithful even though on paper it seems like the ideas are to move the brand forward and for good reason.

So my first thought when I saw it on the refreshed 7 was that it was kind of gimmicky.

And knowing BMW the way that we do, we KNOW if it's on the 7, then it can't be far behind on other models.

And that's where the danger lies...

Would a mainstream BMW 3-Series buyer think it is a move in the right direction if their 3 had it or would it be like Rolex showing their face electronically on a retina display resolution screen?

Yeah, it would LOOK like a Rolex but in essence it would be fake.

So our question is do you think it will be a TURN ON to customers or a TURN OFF?

And should it be offered on other models in their lineup?

Would it jazz you or bother you if you were/are in the market for a BMW?

Our personal opinion at first glance is that it should only be offered as an option in order to gauge customer acceptance.

Kind of how Toyota did it on the old Supra's. You could buy a package with the digital speedo vs. traditional if you thought that was cooler.

Or is inevitable that all displays will be that way and just get over it?

Spies, discuss.

I hate the colors. Looks like faded paint.

Oh Please... Jaguar's had a fully digital dash for years.

Mercedes S Class already has a digital dash.

Benz is a lot more "old school traditional" than BMW, and they've had a digital cluster on the S-class for years. Ditto for Range Rover. Jag, who is probably the only car brand more "old school traditional" than Benz, is aiming all their new cars head on at BMW, and has one in the new XJ. I don't see it hurting their sales, so I don't see why it would hurt BMW either considering they're typically marketing to a younger, edgier, more tech savvy crowd. Let me answer your question with one of my own: if Audi came out with one, would you even be asking the question?

I like what I see... I have always wished BMW put another guage or something like this so I could see audio information (at a minimum, nav info would be great too) in the guages

the dash cluster already shows radio, nav, etc. info in every model except the 1-Series, Z4, and X5. I have a Z4, I wish mine had the cluster from those models.

The BMW faithful have all died. Most of the current crop of BMW drivers don't know whether they are driving a 4 or a V-6, don't know what a run-flat tire is, and, think they still have a spare. Further more, they don't care.

I agree with you 100% there are few real BMW enthusiasts left. People like me appreciate the real cars that made BMW's rep. Cars like the E30 3 series, the E34 5 series that were traditionally styled and a blast to drive. An e34 535i with a 5 speed is a blast to drive, even though the 540i is faster, that big six can ea easily be tuned to make quite a bit more power.

My only witness of an all digital dash was from the Lexus LF-A and I thought it looked phenomenal, but this dash just looks washed out and boring. Furthermore, it is on a luxury saloon 7er, why can't they make it more interesting. Personally, the colors are probably a little off.

Now all other Digital Dash works fine...so The next question is (only the time will tell)..What about reliability of that Dash?...Hopefully it will work better than the Idrive.

This (for its class) is pathetic. How horrid and "Civic-like" does that blue backround look for the digital dash... *smh* This just gives back the credit I didn't give to the Cadillac XTS and it's LCD gauge cluster. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCIgIy64JA8

OH AND I HOPE THIS SITE GAVE CREDIT TO JAGUAR BEFORE MAKING A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS JUST BECAUSE ITS A BMW.

Jag didn't invent digital dash's either. They weren't even the first British brand to have it, Range Rover had it for a year or two before the XJ came out.

The LED dash is a dud. Why? Because a hallmark of a fine automobile is the highly detailed and crafted analogue instrument CLUSTER. A fine cluster is like a grouping of fine watches. They are beautiful to behold and appreciate. They are present when the ignition is on of off. They are not an 'illusion' as with an LED panel.

Notice that fine analogue watches are sought after and highly prized in spite of 40 years of LED and LCD digital watches?

Luxo makers will learn fast to dump LED type dash boards in the high line cars.
