Lexus Readies GS350 Coupe To Replace Discontinued SC430

Lexus said they wants a sport coupe, not a coupe based on 10 min PS of GS. Don't be a slacker!

Unless they do a totally different style for the coupe (like 5er/6er), this will be horrible.

The latest Lexus G is undoubtedly a solid performer but the exterior design is quite unfortunate in that it's one of the dullest/most anonymous (save the rather polarizing front end) designs in the entire luxury car field.

If all they're going to do is make a two-door sedan version of that bloated monstrosity, they'd best direct their efforts on something more viable.

Just dumb... They need the Coupe anyway, and just make a SC replacement... dumb...

The SC was a huge hit. It had a waiting list and sold for 10k over sticker from brokers who bought them new from dealers. It wasn't till about the 5th or 6th year of production that sales started to really fall off. It was old then. Lexus made a lot of money on that car and they continue to bring top dollar as used cars.....

Only in America. Americans are dumb. After the first 2 years the sales numbers fell off drastically. It was never a "Huge Hit". Nice try. And look at the SC sales numbers elsewhere. The first full year that they sold the SC 430 in Japan (2005), they only sold only 1,532 of them (the year after that was 872 sold in japan). Even the Japanese know trash when they see it. Americans aren't as smart as the Japanese.

I drive and appraise today's european cars every day. I just haven't owned one since the 80's they haven't gotten much better in reliablity.

Why is a GS coupe replacing the SC roadster? It doesn't make sense. There should be a GS coupe and an SC roadster if Lexus wants to do it properly.

Theres no way that anyone (any company) can make a proper sports car replacement by just making a coupe version of a sedan. Unless Toyota is just giving up on the idea of making a sports car totally.

Lexus is cutting cost and R&D by using the GS instead of making a completely new SC to battle the competition, and they will sell it for a premium and people will be drawn to it like cult followers because its a LEXUS.

And I'm sure the 911 that you're talking about is also a 1980's model. How about you list some cars that aren't from 27 years ago? You are basing what you know about European cars, based on cars from the 1980's. If you haven't noticed, it isn't the 1980's anymore. Now I can see why you're a Lexus fan. You compare current lexuses against European cars from over 25 years ago. WOW!!!

makes no sense as a 'replacement' for the SC. the SC was theoretically supposed to compete with the SL, though nobody in their right mind would compare the two. a coupe GS would simply be a competitor to the E-class coupe and 4-series coupe...totally different models.

Your wrong and right....The SC out sold the SL in the early 2000 model years and was ofter cross-shopped. The GS coupe is not a replacement for the SC as the moron who wrote this article would have you belive....

the SL cost 50% MORE. people don't cross shop cars that are that far apart in price. the SC never came close to matching the SL.

by your logic people are cross shopping a camry LE with a lexus ES. if they are, please tell us.

Wrong again the SC430 was about 65k and the SL500 was about 80k that's not 70% moron....

2010 lexus SC430 BASE MSRP: $68,405, there were only a few thousand in possible options, so fully equipped it rang up to low $70s.

2010 mercedes SL550 BASE MSRP: $104,775, fully optioned brought it to $130,000.

130000/73000 = 1.78, so 78% more fully equipped.

nobody cross shopped these cars.

Benz had about a 20k cash back on the SL they never sold anywhere near those prices and was cross-shopped with the SC and got beat...The SC was the coolest car going in 2001....
