Out Of ALL Of Porsche's 911s, Is The 993 The BEST There Was? State YOUR Case!
When I think of Porsche, more specifically the 911, there's only one vehicle I think of. It's not the latest and greatest HOT model at the time, like the GT2 RS or the like. It's not the gorgeous, Panamera-like interior of the 991 either.
I think of a 993 Turbo S. In Arena Red.
And I don't have a rational reason to be so incredibly focused on it. I never had a vested interest in one nor have I even drive one. The opportunity simply hasn't presented itself. Sure, it's one of the last air-cooled "greats," but that isn't even a factor in my perspective. I just adore the damn thing.
That said, it is said to be one of the greatest Porsche driving experiences -- in the 911 realm. It's engaging, fun and it's a helluva looker.
But at the end of the day, we want to know one thing and one thing only:
Is it the BEST 911 yet? Is the 993 the benchmark?
Discuss!

For sure the 993!!! Does not have to be the turbo though. The other would be early 70s RS...

Warning, I'm not a Porsche guy, but good god, no. 964 to 996 the worst of them, as far as styling. Unpleasantly long overhangs and a little bulbous looking. Give me anything pre '83, but the ideal for me is any old 1984–1989 Carrera. Recently weakened bumper standards gave them just about the right proportions and a slightly more architectural quality than the balloon-like 993.

I have been fortunate enough to own and drive many 911s over the years. Still the one that stirs great memories was my 1967 911S, no power brakes, no power steering, no electric windows,no frills or gimmicks. Sure it would bite you if you were stupid, but as a pure drivers car, no 911 has come close. Nothing comes close to getting it right in an early 911.

I've been fortunate to own a 997 in the past, and that was a great car, but the 993 turbo is by and far I think the best looking 911 ever, and that is a pretty big role to fill. What I love about the 993, and in particular the turbo is the melding of the short wheelbase air cooled car with modern looking features that add to, not detract from what a 911 is.
NOW, other than believing that the 996 was the WORST 911 ever, I'm pretty sure if offered I'd drive any version again. I'm already eyeing the used car market on 997's, and the 991 certainly looks the part.

Depends 00R.....
For best looking 911 Turbo with that "it" quality I'd say yes the 993 is it.
But overall I like the 997 4S facelift the best for its combo of old school 911 looks but better interior than any previous 911.
Plus it is a hoot to drive without to mutch clutch effort.....

Own a 2011 997 Carerra. I think the 993 is so popular as it's the last of the air cooled 911s, and is the last 911 that "looks" like the old 911s. The 996 was god awful looking. I like the 997 look over the new 991, but from what I've heard, the 991 is the easiest to drive (fast) 911.

That being said, I love the look of the 993. Just can't fit in it at 6'6"

I like the 993 but don't like the "cut lines" around the headlamps. My favorite 911 in terms of style still has to be the original form 1965 to 1973.It did not have the heavy bumper and it had that delicate look
that was carried over from the 356. If you notice Singer Design thinks so as well because he takes 964's and modifys them to look like the original style. The 993 would be in 2nd place in my book.

One other thing. Believe it or not I actually prefer the interior of the 993 over the current 991. The 991 interior is certainly of excellent quality. However it is too "corporate" looking. The 993 and earlier 911 had an old world ambiance that the new ones simply don't have. Yes there is proper ventalation and very good A/C now. I guess because of cost considerations(like Porsche doesn't charge enough in options anyway-yeh right!)you now see blanks on the dashboard where you
would expect some switches to be.The new 991 look pretty good from the outside and I like the rounded headlamps. In a way they hark back to original 911 styling. The tail design is crisp and beautiful to my eyes. But it has become a much larger car and loses the sense of smallness that the original cars had so I would have to rate it in 3rd place behind the 993.I thought the worst looking 911 was the 2nd generation styling of the 996. The original 996 had the "Fried Egg" look which to my eyes was not too bad looking. The problem was it looked too much like the Boxster. Speaking of Boxster.I'm glad Porsche has finally allowed it to have it's own identity. It finally looks significantly different than the 911.

993 is close, but for Porschefiles, pretty much every generation have their fans except for the 996 (ugh!)

Outstanding '97 C4S. Loved it, loved it! Only complaint was that the car was a bit narrow inside so when I was with my 6'-1" son, out shoulders would touch.
It was spooky good looking and would draw admiring looks wherever I was driving or parked. Never any problems, just great driving. The guy I sold it to sent me a bottle of brandy on each anniversary of his purchase for about 4 years in appreciation of the car!
