Did Apple Just Rewrite The Book For In Car Navigation With iOS 6?

If you're an Apple fan, own an iPhone, or just happened to wake up yesterday, you already know that Apple has unveiled the next iteration of its mobile operating system, iOS 6.

It's not as if that was a surprise. iOS 6 was one of the worst-kept secrets in Apple's history, with details leaking out weeks in advance of the launch -- but of course, those leaks didn't present the full story of the significantly enlarged operating system.

Now that Apple CEO Tim Cook has walked us through iOS 6, we have a better understanding its scope. And unfortunately, for some of our favorite apps and app-makers, Apple has just made life a whole lot harder.

No. it wont even have real-time traffic updates. But Apple lemmings will still call it the best.

Wrong. From Apple: "With Maps, you get real-time traffic information to calculate your ETA. Maps gives you details on what’s causing a backup, so you can tell if there’s a major incident or just a temporary slowdown. And if traffic’s a mess, Maps offers alternative routes to save you time."

I've heard that we're in a "post PC" era because PCs are now extinct and everyone is using smart phones and tablets in their place. (Riiiiiight, in my best Dr. Evil voice). So now some GPS functionality in a smart phone is going to kill off the dedicated GPS industry. Oooookay.

Too bad it still doesn't come with NAVIGATION, like Android has for years now. And no, turn-by-turn isn't live navigation, Apple leghumpers.

OK, what is the difference between turn-by-turn and live navigation? Reading Apple's words, it sure seems like live navigation to me:

"As you approach a turn, Maps speaks directions, so you can keep your eyes on the road. In addition, the screen turns into a 3D perspective view of the road ahead. Large signs and arrows superimposed over the image show you which way to go and how long it’s going to take to get there — even if your screen is locked. As you approach a turn, the camera angle changes dynamically to show you where to go. If you miss a turn, don’t worry. Maps automatically reroutes you and updates your ETA."

I understand there is a lot of hatred for Apple out there, but I'd like keep the facts straight.

No. Android has had turn-by-turn navigation for over 2 years. Can't figure out why people think Apple is being so inovative with this. It is a direct copy of Google Map's navigation.

People constantly miss the point on this kind of thing. It's not about feature by feature, it's about total integration and this is something Apple gets better than anyone else. Creating a seamless user experience. Apple's own apps will probably work better on an Apple platform than anything that currently exists and this includes Google Maps. Traditionally Apple doesn't jump into a market right away. They study and plan how to make that market experience better. When they do arrive, everyone else reacts and is in a position where they have to play catch-up. ipod, itunes, iphone, ipad. happens over and over again.
