Lexus Says It Will Take Years To Catch The Germans In US Sales Race

Lexus is looking to an unprecedented array of new products, along with a revitalized production system to help it recover from last year’s sharp sales slide.

Long the U.S. luxury sales leader, Lexus suffered a sharp decline in 2011 under an assault by key German rivals compounded by the production cuts that followed Japan’s devastating March earthquake and tsunami.  The Toyota subsidiary wound up in third place for the year, behind both BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

They need NEW products. Their entire lineup is so boring and calculated but there's no passion in it (aside from the LF-A and IS-F). Where is their Z4/SLK fighter? Or a mini SUV along the lines of the GLK or X1? Things like that make the difference and add consumer appeal to the brand.

“I don’t believe we’re going to put up the numbers,” said Tim Morrison, vice president of sales for Lexus, in part because “the Germans have much more extensive product lines.”

Indeed, BMW, Mercedes and Audi have been flooding dealers with all manner of new models in recent years and Morrison cautioned that, “I don’t think you’re going to see us match that.”

and then there's this big IF. an average age of 50! wooohoo! getting the younger grandmothers....

If the new ES succeeds it could see an average buyer age of around 50, almost a decade younger than the current model.

mostly boring cars for people who don't like to drive and just want a value-priced luxury car...why are there SO many posts about this brand?

Because unlike you, they have a clue about cars.

yeah, because people who are better educated and make more money definitely know less about cars.

Lexus needs a small crossover based on the Next Gen Toyota RAV-4 coming out next year that is a tick bigger and better looking then the cute-ute it is replacing.
They also need to get in the game with an electronic suspension system like Delphi is using in Cadillac and Ferrari to make the things ride good so they won’t eliminate their customer base but also handle well to attract new customers.
They need to throw anti roll bars in the chipper shredder like they did on the McLaren MP$-12C…these technologies are not out of reach or all that wacky expensive but they can help inject some excitement in the undrpinnings of future models.
They also need to steel the Audi Stylist that went to Kia and pony up some cash on their stupid designs.
I would also hire Peter DLorenzo to fix their god awful marketing campaign…
They also need MORE POWER and turbochargers with smaller engines to meet better fuel economy targets and direct injection across the board.

The "Ferarri" suspension was actually co-developed WITH Cadillac.

As far as the turbos go, yes, more companies need to get going on the turbo technology. Ideally, the best mathematical gains SHOULD be from a turbo diesel hybrid. Diesel has the most BTUs of any modern fuel source, and turbos are pretty much "free" power; the same thing goes with the electric hybrid system if the majority of the power is sourced from regenerative braking and idling.

Okay, because I know this place, an edit is required, however not allowed. Still, a fact deserves stating. Kerosene (aka Jet Fuel, aka RP-1) DOES have more BTUs per gallon, yes. However, the price makes it barely viable as a motor vehicle fuel.

I dont even concider Lexus a luxury brand. 90% of the countries its sold as Toyota. Lexus RX = Toyota Harrier
lexus IS = Toyota Alteza. in US the only reason they change name to Lexus is because no one will pay over 30k for a toyota. and if you look closely the new Lexus interiors are just a little above toyota. like most lexus have hard plastic lower door panels now. and the new 2013 ES even has hard plastic glove box and lower dash pannels.

good morning, u obviously just awoke from a very deep slumber. Lexus has had unique prodcts for years now, and half their sales are coming from outside the US. Neither the Harrier nor Altezza exist today. Go back to sleep, maybe flying vehicles will be around the next time you awaken.

black: yup, mercedes strips down it's E-class and sells it as a cabs in europe. and it's STILL a mercedes. what does that have to do with toyotas that are rebadged as luxury brands?

there are a lot of toyota/lexus joint clones still in some markets. BTW did you check the hard plastics used in RX and 2013 ES ? the whole door panel below armrest is hard and ES is even worse. luxury cars are not suppose to have hard plastic PERIOD

Lexless relies way too much on their small SUV which lacks identity and charisma. It is just a grocery getter and nothing more. They have allowed their entire line to be nothing more than a Toyota with more chrome and better fake wood in the cabin.
Lexless has lost their way and lost.
