Will Toyota Attract Younger Buyers By Offering A 40 MPG Hybrid Avalon?

Aiming to attract younger buyers to a model whose current owner base is among the industry’s oldest, Toyota is adding a hybrid powertrain option to the ’13 Avalon sedan, due later this year.

The Avalon Hybrid will achieve 40 mpg (5.9 L/100 km) combined city/highway and will be the first full hybrid-electric vehicle in what Toyota describes as the premium midsize segment, which includes the Hyundai Azera and Buick LaCrosse.

Auto makers recently have started picking up their game in the traditionally conservative family sedan market, revising new models with more luxury features and expressive styling inside and out.

I'm not sure attracting younger buyers is their goal by adding a hybrid. Odd question. Where do you come up with this stuff?

The hybrid engine should have been paired to their 3.5L and been the only engine. This would have raised the bar for the Avalon.

And who said it competes with the Lacrosse? Its more in line with the Azera/Impala (Premium FWD and fullsize).

...Yep, it will sell and that's all Toyota should care about. That's how they stay on top of their game so they have plenty of extra money to build high quality premium Suv's, Trucks & Automobiles. And that my friends is how Toyota can afford to build the LFA, make 500 stop production and concentrate on their next Big Dog projects. Takes a big Vision, the worlds top engineers and tons of cash all over the globe to do what they have been doing and will continue to do...BE NUMBER ONE!!

....What is wrong with this picture some one might ask? THE AVALON IS NOT TARGETED TO YOUNG PEOPLE! BABY BOOMERS STILL PAY THE BILLS!! That's one of Hondas major problems...They somehow think they have the secret to the future by consitantly targeting the youth who are broke as hell! At least Hyundai/Kia has figured that much out and that's one of the reasons they are starting to sell plenty of cars, Make'em cheap, sell'em cheap & definately target as many Baby-Boomers as possible.

Younger = people in their late 30s & 40s instead of consumers in 50s and 60s

...MorePower let me give u a hint. Baby Boomers range from I believe 1948 to about 1964 which means you are partly correct concerning the majority of those Boomers who have and are still making major purchases. Especially, as far as I believe and observed the individuals who purchase those expensive Toyota Avalons or other Toyotas in and above that price range. Dont forget a loaded Highlander, Seqouia (spelling), Tundra & Landcruiser are beyond 40k. A Landcruiser starts around 58k. Those vehicles my friend are usually purchased by well off Boomers, who are still a mast majority of the population. So,from about 45-48 and down there are some, a small number who are wealthy young people in their 20's, 30's & early 40's who can afford to buy a Friggin 40k vehicle from Toyota or any other premium brand.

...A correction 3/4's the way into line 7. I suppose the Boomers who are buying brand new vehicles may not necessarily be well off, but they love creature comforts and those cushy mobiles nonetheless come at a premium price.
