The BMW M3 is largely considered an automotive icon that spurred a revolution in the entry-level premium segment. It combined the elements of sport, luxury and relatively affordable into one small little package.

But as the years have added up, so has the M3's power figures, weight and overall size.

The next-gen product -- sometimes called the M4 [we're holding off on that as we've played that game before] -- is expected to be the best one yet; however, there are some caveats. Thankfully, it's audibly clear in this video that BMW is going back to a six-cylinder motor.

The problem is that this means the next M3 will feature forced induction to achieve peak performance. What we don't know is if the next-gen car will have a single, bi or tri-turbo setup.

Power is expected to be in the 450 horsepower area.

What you're seeing and hearing is the F80 M3 / F82 M4's anticipated inline 6 cylinder engine with multiple turbochargers, pushing approximately 450 horsepower. The engine has been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. But, we also think there may be a possibility that the engine turns out to be a reworked/enhanced version of a successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced).

I like the current BMW M3 with the V8 better than this. I don't like the way the exhaust sound in this prototype BMW M3.

I know everyone is trying to save weight etc but I think they can tune the exhaust to sound meaner. After all it's an M3.

Agreed. I love the high revving V8 in the current M3, though I also love the I6 of the E46...
