TTAC Rolls The Dice And Comes Up With The ATS On Top Of The Heap
Size and weight are a big part of GM’s DNA. They beat Ford not with a frontal assault on the Model T but by offering a larger, heavier, flashier car. They thought they could do the same to BMW. But, even as the Bavarians packed on the inches and pounds, car buyers “in the know” saw the additional size and weight of Cadillacs as a sign that the General either lacked technical competence or just didn’t “get it.” Well, maybe the “new GM” really is different.

With the 2013 Cadillac ATS, the company has pulled out all the stops to directly challenge the BMW 3-Series with a rear-wheel-drive car that is—surprise—a few tenths of an inch smaller and a few pounds lighter. Could the people who tried to sell us the Cimmaron have gotten this one right?

Meh. A car that looks like a pretty version of the soon-to-be-replaced Ford Fusion doesn't make me want to be seen in it.

And despite all the raves, sales will still be disappointing after the first few months... why? Because the truth is, many people out there are still badgewhores and will still go out and buy a BMW, Merc, or Audi because of the badge.

In the US, Cadillac, in general, is associated with older folks and its so hard to ditch that image, no matter what they do. So I feel their sales will come from either older folks looking to trade in their Malibu or Lacrosse to "Step Up" into a premium vehicle. I feel that this car will be the entry point for people looking to get into this market, who are coming from American Brands, but I don't neccessarily see people coming off BMW, Merc, Audi, or even Lexus, Acura, or Infiniti leases and going into this car...
