2013 Lincoln MKZ Undercuts The Lexus ES 350 By $175 But Is That Going To Make A Difference For Anyone?

Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln division said Tuesday that its base price for the 2013 MKZ will be $175 less than the new Lexus ES 350.

Base price for the MKZ will be $35,925, excluding $875 delivery and destination charge. It comes standard with 10 class-exclusive features, including push-button shift, active noise control, an 8-inch touch screen, remote start and Easy Fuel capless fuel filler. The hybrid version of the MKZ will be priced the same, continuing a pricing trend Lincoln started in with the MKZ and its hybrid sibling in 2010.

Why?

Post that I asked the question "Why" to was deleted. Hence leaving a question to a post that doesn't exist. Might as well delete this too.

The base pricng should not matter, but the fact that the hybrid undercuts the ES300h may be an issue. Likely depends on content for the price.

....nothin original here, who is the Buick tryin to roll with? Lexus? Lincoln has definately totally lost it's way. Chasing after that new ES350 will only add insult to injury for the MKZ.

...yeah, it's content alright. No way that MKZ is goin to be a quality match for that new ES350...$175 will mean absolutely nothing after people take a test drive in the ES. Lexus already knows it has the competition beat with it's new entry-level bread winner.

Quality? How hard will it be to match the quality of a car that is based off a Toyota Camry?

I think that you and several other people here are overplaying the ES350. It's lexuses lowest offering. It's heavily based off the Toyota Camry. But reading some of the replies here, you would think that the ES350 was some sort of quality European Sedan. It isn't. Well I guess if your an American it is.

It's a camry with more bells and whistles.

So it's based off of another lifeless appliance. I'm sure that the Avalon would sell like hotcakes in Europe.

you have got to be some loser to walk into a lincoln dealership over lexus to save $175.00.. lincoln would have to undercut the lexus by about 5k to make it worth it when you factor in the resale value..

Undercut? for what? You do realize that the ES350 is essentially a Toyota Camry? It's the ES that's overpriced. The MKZ enjoys not having the burden of having run-of-the-mill, low cost underpinnings.

The ES350 isn’t deserving of the premium that Lexus is charging. There’s a reason why they can only sell them in America. The ES350 is a dressed up run-of-the-mill sedan. No thanks. But hey…. Americans seem to love them. So who am I to argue against the masses.?

You know how much 3-series and C-class that they've sold worldwide? A significant amount more than that glorified Camry. Thanks for playing.

What else can you compare the ES 350 to in europe? Europe doesn't have any Buicks.

"So I guess the A4 is superior to both since it outsells them in Europe?"

- No. That’s the Lexus fans argument. They use sales numbers to claim superiority. But only when Lexus sales numbers are higher.

Quality means that the Lexus requires 3% less trips to the dealer over 5 years vs the competition. That number is less than one. I'd take the additional 3% trips to the dealer over the lexus if it means I'll have a car that isn't a dull boring appliance (like the Lexus).

I didn't even consider a Toyota/Lexus when I bought my MKZ Hybrid last year. I got a great deal and I bought something made in North America. Why would I even consider sending my money overseas unless I was there? BTW, I love my steel blue, loaded up hybrid, and so does anyone who sees it. The only way I'd buy a Toyota or a Lexus is if it was used and cheap.

Personally and purely from an aesthetic/exterior design perspective, I like the MKZ. It has a unique design unlike many other sedans out there and the quasi hatchback vs short trunk gives it an athletic pose.

Lincoln I'm sorry to Crash your Party but people who buy Lexus are VERY......Loyal Customers. My older sister has a Lexus ES350 and her next car is going to be another Lexus ES350/hybrid or move up to the Lexus GS350.

Toyota and Lexus did a really good job of marketing or converting the Toyota owners to move up and get a Lexus. Just like BMW, MB and Audi owners who has very loyal clients base as well. Well it's a nice car and good luck.

I'd pick that MKZ over the Camry... I mean ES350 anyday of the week.

Edmunds also picked the Mitsubishi over the "perennial award winning 3-series". You have anything negative to say about their assessment? Now watch you post everything in that article but the final verdict.

"And anyone knows that the Evo competes directly with the WRX"

- No one said that it didn’t. The Evo X MR also competes with the 335. If not, then why did Edmunds compare the EVO with the 3-series?

"And anyone knows that the Evo competes directly with the WRX, both are strictly performance-geared stripper vehicles not built for comfort and luxury...while the 3-series combines all 3 for another $7-10k."

- It combines all three but isn’t the best at all three. It doesn’t handle better than the EVO, and its slower than the EVO.

"And based on your idiotic reasoning, your car sucks simply because they sell a boatload more 3-series worldwide. Thanks for playing."

- "Thanks for playing" Now you’re using a term that I've used here several times. How about being original? And you did exactly what I said that you would do. You quoted parts of the article, but not the final verdict. Why didn't you post that? Doesn’t support your flawed argument (whatever the heck your argument is, I’m still trying to figure it out)

Still not posting the final verdict? You are so funny and predictable. Didn't I say? "Now watch you post everything in that article but the final verdict."

But here's another qoute that supports what I said. And this is also from the article (but for some reason you didn't include it)

"But we're splitting hairs here. Yes, when driven to the limit on a deserted, twisting road, the Evo is the quicker of these two cars.

- Now leave me the hell alone.

Here's ALL of the final verdict. Not just the part that he thinks supports his twisted argument. Oh yeah... THE EVO WON.

"There Must Be a Winner
That this was a close comparison test goes without saying. But in the end, the ability of the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR Touring to deliver value in the form of usable features like a dual-clutch transmission, all-wheel drive and limited-slip differentials give it the win.

But the crux of this contest surpasses any evaluation that can be given by our comparison-test scoring protocol, which emphasizes plenty of numbers. The real meat of this contest is a matter of what you want from your only car. Most who buy these performance sedans will use them that way — hauling wives, kids, friends and cargo. Quickly, if necessary.

So it comes down to what's important for you in a performance sedan. Many will say it's a sublime mix of performance and comfort. And for those folks, the BMW 335i is the right car. If it's purely performance that you want and cost is a factor, then the Mitsubishi Evo is your car.

Either way, the steering feel is world-class."
