If The Asian Brands Are So Much Better Than The Europeans, Then Why Are They Scoring So Low On The APEAL?

The APEAL study is different from J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Survey, which measures problems owners say they had in the three months after buying or leasing a vehicle.

The study measures how gratifying a new car or truck is to own and drive after 90 days of ownership. It measures the owners opinion of their vehicle’s styling, performance and design.

In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to find meaningful differences on the quality study because the entire industry has shown improvement.

Among all brands, Porsche finished first this year for the eighth consecutive year. The German automaker received a score of 887 on a 1,000 point scale.

Porsche finished just ahead of Jaguar, BMW and Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Asian automakers’ brands did not perform as well as German automakers. Toyota, Honda and Nissan all finished below the industry average.

Because the notion of Asian cars being better is complete BS! That's why. Are they less expensive in some cases to own, yes, but better, I don't think so.

Now give them credit.. at one time (in the 70's to 90's) they were far better. However they started losing ground around 2000 and by the end of the decade had lost the lead.

Their biggest problem IMHO is the lack of innovation. yes they have invented some things but in general just they follow the lead of others.

But tin cans rust and are technically less advanced.

Wrong wrong wrong. Tin actually forms a thin oxide layer which resists corrosion.

European brand buyers better be happy in this kind of study, because they overpaid, and the car's APEAL may not last through the next IQS or long term survey.

You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. People generally wish (appeal) for what they don't have or can't afford at the moment. Its human nature. Asian cars are affordable hence there is less appeal because they already have one or can easily get one.

...Dont let 009 fool ya. He lives hoping and waiting for Toyota's demise and Lexu's crash and burn days. Fact is, it aint gonna happen! He's a Hyundai man through and through, anticipating the day when Hyundai/Kia will take the top spot. Trust me, in the end Lexus will still be the brand to beat and will remain the one all others are compared. Facts are Facts Bubba009....

BD, that does cover most of it. I've been around longer than most of you and I've had time to own or have experience with just about every brand except the Koreans. I loved the Porsches and BMWs I got to own. But the cost of ownership just doesn't justify the difference.
Notice that a ten year old Accord is usually valued at a higher price than a ten year old 5 series. Why is that?

Asians car do have less appeal currently, but I think that's changing. Hyundai is definitely taking design risks and even stodgy Toyota is coming abouts... so it'll be a great future for consumers I think!
