The new 3-series coupe is nice, but not as pretty as this!

The new 3-series coupe is nice, but not as pretty as this!
Here's what the original design sketches of the BMW 3-series coupe looked like before it became reality.

The final car looks really nice but if only it could have been truer to the original vision!

Sweet. The picture is very nice. If the coupe looked more like this, Wow!!!! HOT!

The rear really reminds me of the old 8-series, one of our favorite BMW design's ever!

Absolutely Stunning....after a couple of face lifts the new coupe may look very similar to these photos!!!

This looks similar to the new coupe anyway. I do not see the difference!

wish they could make the roof line more sleeker like the concept picture shown :(

AgentOO1 - Please don't tell me you actually liked the design of the current 7-series that Chris Bangle cranked out? Now I do respect Bangle, but the front headlamps with the "eyebrows" and the over done "butt". I personally think he was trying way too hard to out-do everyone else. Notice the 3-series didn't really change all too much, because they wouldn't let Bangle ruin BMW's "bread & butter" sedan.

Did you notice how they slighty altered the rear of the current 7-series sedan?

Above sketches were a little over done - those rims look like 24 inchers - the trunk looks way too short the side windows aren't in proportion to the overall vehicle. Personally, the front and sides are great - the back is boring and a way too "safe" design.

courtstone, agent 001 said the 8-series, a 90's coupe.

001 has or had a 7 if I'm not mistaken, which there is nothing wrong with because I think it looks good. This concept looks pretty similar to the new coupe, of course it doesn't look at "cartoony" as in the drawing, but no production model does. Either way the new coupe is hot, this does look a little more agressive, but what concept doesn't?

Why didn't they do that, WHHHHYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

Yes, like we all know all sketches for all cars are exaggerated. Even the Ford 500 looked good in its sketch. Agent 001 was talking about the 8 series which was a sweet ride long before Bangle ever showed up in BMW land.

In 15 years, when someone else comes along and begins to make new and fresh designs on BMW, all of you will think that Chris Bangle was amazing. You will be saying the same things about the new guy who takes risks with the design with any celebrated manufacturer. Lay off the Bangle stuff will ya. Its getting really really &%$&* old. Ask yourself one question, if they looked as bad as you THINK they look, then why is BMW racking up sales higher than they ever have? Look at the sales statistics and tell me that. Until then, put your teeth in Alice, and open your eyes.

This actually what the 6 series should have been like, because it looks wider and lower than what the 3 series does. So it would be perfect for that.

C'mon guys.

You really think car design is that easy? Ooohh, lets whip up a sleek coupe drawing and put it straight into production. Duh.

After this initial sketching process, the design has to be refined in wind tunnel testing, crash-testing, pedestrian safety, not to mention driver visibility, cost efficiency (that means sharing as many components with the 3-series sedan etc.) and of course general aesthetic tweaking.

The reasons this design sketch didn't make it into production are obvious: The glass house is too small, which impairs visibility greatly and makes the car look too bulky, the shoulders are too pronounced which adds mass to the car while eating into interior space, the front-end is awkward (the pointed nose would not meet pedestrian safety requirements), while its overly-pronounced curves, while they look good on paper, are too extreme even for BMW. Remember the 3-series has to appeal to a wide range of customers, not the tuner crowd.

Either Chris Bangle went back to design school or he was told to keep his butt out of the design process on this one. I think this is what the design will slowly evolve to within the next 5 years. If they put it into production right away they'll be scrambling to figure out what to do for an encore. Bottom line: I LUV IT!

I agree that the new 3 coupe looks very feminine.

I agree with Matthew, however I think BMW could have been a bit more edgy in the final design. The front of the new coup is good, however I think the rear is a let down. It's sloping down trunk from side profile makes the car look very femanine and not very sporty... Looks more to me like an elegant coupe instead of a sport coupe. The rear end in these pics is totally feasible, however BMW chose a more Mercedes approach to the production model. I am a little disappointed in the production coupes looks. Not as sporty as the outgoing model.
