Hyundai Motor, labor union try to resume talks, but outlook uncertain

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's top automaker, and its labor union were trying to resume negotiations on Wednesday to defuse a month-long partial strike, but a union spokesman said it's still uncertain whether the talks will happen.

Unionized workers at Hyundai Motor have stopped working as long as six hours a day since June 26, demanding a 9.1 percent rise in pay and better working conditions.

If Hyundai Motor and the 44,000-member union fail to settle the labor dispute on the same day, there will be no negotiations until August 5, because union workers will take their summer vacation by then, said union spokesman Song Hee-seok in Ulsan, where the automaker's main plant is based
