Fiat SpA reported a net profit of $440 million for the second quarter of 2012 on Tuesday, but said it would have lost nearly $303 million without the contribution of Chrysler Group LLC.
Fiat itself was stung by a dramatic decline in European sales, particularly in its Italian home market, where sales are falling to a levels not seen since 1979. But the company said these losses were more than offset by Chrysler's strong performance in the United States.
On Monday, Chrysler reported a second-quarter profit of $436 million.
Fiat said it was profitable in the rest of the world as well.
