Would YOU Rather Have An All-New BMW 6-Series Or An Old-School 8-Series In Top-Notch Shape?

Would YOU Rather Have An All-New BMW 6-Series Or An Old-School 8-Series In Top-Notch Shape?
Although BMW does not officially make an all-new 8-Series that is technically the early 1990s successor, the closest thing to that today is the landshark, the 6-Series coupe.

And when I came across this very interesting offer -- an BMW 850i with just under 11,500 miles -- I just wondered WHICH I would pick if money wasn't an option and I wanted a good old fashion big body BMW coupe. While an all-new 6-Series is an enticing piece, it just is lacking that special panache that is dripping from the 8-Series.

I can't even think of a vehicle that looks like the 8-Series.

You know what they say: "They don't make them like they used to."

That saying goes really both ways. That's because you'd miss out on all the lovely technological features of the all-new 6 and, let's face it, the 6-Series interior is probably the BEST interior ever in a BMW product, ever. But you'd get to have a more old-fashioned drive in the early 90s 8-Series.

All that said, what's it going to be? The all-new, tech laden luxocruiser -- the 6 -- OR the spartan, exotic, old-school 8-Series.

YOU decide!

The 1991 BMW 850i was blasted by the automotive media and ardent Bimmer-philes as an enormous letdown - a passionless cruiser from the self-proclaimed makers of the Ultimate Driving Machine. The complaints were numerous, and many were valid. But the 8-series' mission wasn't to tear up back roads, it was to grab attention on the boulevard - and nearly two decades later, it still turns heads.

I'd take an 850i in a heartbeat over a 650i. More of a true BMW. Drop-dead gorgeous styling. Absolutely distinct from anything else on the road.

Neither. Give me an even older M6 or 635CSi before these two. I do like the 8 more as it has aged, but is was more of a luxo-barge than the sports GTs they were before. Made the mistake of driving my '88 M5 to the BMW dealer and test drove the 6 GranCoupe. Car was fast and handled well, but had no feel at all. Staying with old BMWs or new MINIs (unless I break down and get a Porsche) until they fix the steering feel.

I will take the new 6 Gran Coupe. The repairs/maintenance on the old school 8 will be more EXPENSIVE!

You think the repairs on the 8 will be epensive wait till you have to have something fixed on that new 6?

Agree. Either I am getting old and sentimental or the new BMWs just do not exude the same passion they did even 10-15 years ago.

And there is something about flip-headlights and power antennae that will always win me over regardless of how flawed they turned out to be.

I have loved the 850 for years, I keep dreaming to get a 850csi.
Definitely a 850 over a newer 6 series.
To those above being practical about the car choice, this is about passion for the car, not practicality and warranty, the 850 has the sexy curves. Not a lot passion the newer cars

8 series all the way.
These guys clamoring over the cost to maintain the 8 as the reason to choose the 6?? Pay attention: the 8 is full depreciated. The 6 will depreciate at least $60,000 over 5 years. Thats the true cost. Even if it cost you $10,000 in service on the 8 you will still be ahead of the game by $50,000 in five years and be driving something unique.

I had an 850 and it was a lovely 1990's era grand sport cruiser. However, it just cannot compare to the 20 year newer 650. The 850 was sweet back then but it had its problems. My 850 had many electrical problems as well so reliability was an issue.

Engineering and technology have evolved way beyond where the 850 was. The new 650 is a state of the art and far surpasses the 850 in drivability, space, power, features and handling.

No longer a fan of German Cars, but can say that the 8 series v12 had serious sulphur issues with this particular engine. I'd take an 8 series 840 (v8) over the V12.

As someone above mentioned I too would prefer a 635CSi much more. Back then BMW's were built better and more bullet proof then today's crap.

no one liked the handling of the 8. Way too front heavy.
