Can YOU Name Some Of The BEST And MOST Fun Death Traps That Were Produced?
You know what I love about AutoSpies? That we can ask questions and discuss the really FUN topics in the automotive kingdom.

Some of you may give us grief from time to time, but one thing 001's taught me it's that we have to have fun.

So, when I saw a vintage Ferrari 246 GTS "Dino" and I said "that's killer" and my passenger said "that thing's a death trap" I sort of chuckled to myself. Likely because if I were to go out in a fiery wreck, I'd love for it to be in a Dino.

That got my wheels turning: What were some other amazing cars that were stunning, fun to drive and likely to be considered a "death trap?"

While folks today look at a MINI Cooper or Smart ForTwo and likely have the same "I'd never drive that," response because it's too small comparable to today's oversized sport-utility vehicles, it's not until you see a Porsche 914 that you realize how good a MINI or Smart has it.

What say you?

A car condemned by a guy who didn't even have a drivers license?

Two that I owned: Fiat 850 (fun tin can; classic F.I.A.T.) and Datsun 260Z (horrible vapor lock in the summer - step on the gas and the car sputtered and died - not fun in front of a semi).

Corvair Turbo, Cosworth Vega, Regal Grand National and the Merkur.

All ground breaking for the time and all death traps.

'99 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner (4x2)
No ABS, no traction control, no brake redistribution, in fact no rear brakes of any significance (even with 400 lbs. of sand bags in the truck bed), Bilstein suspension from hell (must've been the leaf springs and front coil-overs wound by Neanderthals), and powerful enough V6 to get you into trouble, but not enough to get you out of it. Obvious high and front-end center of gravity that kept it tipsy, and a tin-foil sheet metal bendable by a 7-year-old's pinky. It was impossible to keep it in the lane at speeds over 50 mph and any wind at all (took it to 104 mph once, air-drag limited). The drive-shaft slip-yoke ate (and promptly spit out) a can of grease a month, and the fuel economy did not go much over 20 mpg.

And yet sometimes I miss the darn thing regardless of how many times I nearly killed myself (and others) with it. It looked sharp with aftermarket fender flares, running boards, 30x10.5 Michelin ATXs on spaced-out alloys, a mountain bike rack on the lowered truck gate, the bluish Japanese extra bright HID bulbs that lasted three months, and the hood-mounted bug deflector that redirected all the juicy bugs right into my field of view. It helped move countless friends' furniture, bikes and snowboards. It never abandoned me once. All that a kid-at-heart would want. Regardless of all the issues I cared for the thing, washed and waxed it every week until an X5 Bavarian from South Carolina came into my mind and wouldn't leave.

427 A.C. Cobra back in the day, was far, far more car than many owners understood. They paid dearly for their ignorance.

I think you're being unfair to the venerable 914. Crumple zones, and post-1973 reinforced doors. You should google "Porsche 914 accidents" and see how many folks have smashed them up and walked away to tell the story...
