Do the BMW Dealers Near YOU Dare To Charge $20,000 OVER Retail For A 2013 BMW Gran Coupe?
It never ceases to amaze me on what a dealer will do to make money these days.  From tagging on extras you do not want, to loading everything on the lot to the hilt to get the maximum amount of profit.  The sky is the limit for some of these guys, and you can't blame them.

After all if there are people out there willing to pay it, then you certainly ought to provide an avenue to get it.

With that said can you justify those that add "Market Adjustments"?  Simply an additional mark up for either high demand or hard to get vehicle.  How about a $20,000 Market Adjustment for a 2013 BMW 640 Gran Coupe?  Now this dealer is in Los Angeles where money grows on tree, but REALLY.... $20,000?

What are the dealers in your area selling the 640 Gran Coupe for?  Do any of them have the moxie to tag on $20,000?

There is nothing on this earth for which I would pay more than the manufacturer's suggested list. In cases that bargaining is permitted (such as a car purchase), I would expect to be less than "retail".

I know that dealership and part of that adjustment is to pay for all of the crappy radio advertising and media buys. There are better deals to be had in Southern California if you want that car.

If just wait a year or two and get a pre-certified one instead and it will probably come with 4-5 years manufactured warranty as well. And save myself shit load of money.

But I Never like this new BMW 6-Series anyway because I think the last generation BMW 6-Series was one of the best looking coupe on the road.

009 - What's the matter, isn't this the free-market gov't hands off supply & demand way that you have been preaching to the world? Or do you prefer gov't intervention when it affects your beloved BMWs :-) BTW and OT, how's your wife's used RX doing? When is she going to trade it in for a Hyundai SUV?

Ferrari's and Lambos pretty much all sell over sticker due to supply constraints so why no this car? A free market will sort itself out. It all depends how bad you want to be the first on your block. Should we cry foul when a dealer is not able to make a 7% markup on a new car at sticker and has to sell it for a few hundred over invoice?

These are "image" cars for douche bags who are so insecure that they cannot sit at a stop light without looking around to see who is noticing them and the car they know HAS TO BE the best as they spent enough money on it to give a normal person gas!!! "They see me!! they see my car!! they think my penis is at least normal size, or close to it."
Anyone who experienced BMW 30 or 40 years ago can be sickened by the direction they have taken in recent years. Nothing like the cars I lusted after then. Tell me how a 4500# car is sporty? It is a pig.

Only a stupid fool would pay $20,000 OVER the sticker price (which has a markup over invoice too). There are many gorgeous (true) sports cars you can own without paying a dealer markup. Wait about a year and save the $20 grand. No wonder people have such a dislike for car salesman and dealerships.

it is silly and i wouldn't do it. but being the first to have the hottest new toy demands a premium. silly to me, yes, but they're not stupid. simple supply and demand.

Wow. As if the GC wasn't overpriced to begin with. However, Cali tends to be a pretty big offender with dealer markups. I remember years ago when shopping for a car in the Sacramento area, the dealer had a $10,000 markup on the car I wanted. I told him flat out that I wasn't paying the markup and he worked the deal.

Don't get us wrong, we are free market guys here and a dealer can ask anything they want for a car.

Our only points are:

1. Does it leave a bad taste in your mouth and make you shy away from business at that dealership?
2. Did you know (we didn't) that the BMW Gran Coupe was THAT hot?

The Panamera, CLS or A7 never sold for OVER MSRP.

I was just shocked when I saw the window sticker.

1) that's one dealer, not ALL dealers. I am sure 99.99% of dealers are not marking the cars up.
2) I am sure you could have found one dealer selling Panamera's/CLS's/A7's for over MSRP when they first came out too. To say "they never sold for over MSRP" is silly. Just because you didn't happen to stumble across one doesn't mean there wasn't a single dealer out there trying.

supply and demand are pretty simple market forces. this is a brand-new low-volume gorgeous car, so initially there will far more buyers than there are cars. after a few months, these things always go away and they'll simply sell at sticker.

IT comes down to just how stupid a potential buyer is and how little integrity they have. The dealership's are just greedy pigs that should be avoided.

If someone stole $500. from you, you would call the police. How does a $20,000. robbery sound to you?

are you a communist? you are either for a free market forces or not. there's no middle ground here.

Like anyone on this site wouldn't attempt to maximize their profit if they had an opportunity to and the role was reversed.

Not for $20K I wouldn't. The dealership is deliberately putting this out there to see which "idiot" will step forward and take the bait. There's always one duma@@ that will. Why not do the reverse - NOBODY buy their car and let the dealership have it stuck on his lot for about 2-3 months. The interest a dealership accrues from his "floorplan" by not getting a buyer might make him think twice about marking it up. Just stay away from these dealerships.

kearns: why are you so offended by a free market? people are free to pay as much as they want to be the first to have something. perhaps the government should set all prices?

Then why doesn't the Apple store do it when iPhones/iPads are scarce.

My point is I think the damage done to customer perception of the dealer is more than the $20k in extra profit they will make on that car.

because apple prices egregious markup into it's products. love apple. but there's no rational reason whatsoever why a mac book pro should cost $2000 (or much more) when a dell that does the same thing costs $600.

"Then why doesn't the Apple store do it when iPhones/iPads are scarce."

Seriously?????

Apple sells their own products and probably has a 100% profit margin. Apple retail stores dont compete with each other over price. If they have a sale it applies at all apple stores. Compare that to a dealer which at sticker has an 8% markup and competition undercutting them on the exact same product.

You should know this!!!

PS When apple products are scarce you do find them marked up over retail on Ebay and Craigslist.

The Dealer also is damaging the BMW image cause if the car stays too long there, the perception of the customer is that something is wrong in the car or the the dealer...also when you get use to a design it will lose appeal rapidly which will hurt sales very quick. and Finally ....does they really thing that Americans are so stupid? I they are, I will have to open my business there.
