Manual Labor - When Was The Last Time You Drove A Stick Shift Vehicle?

Manual Labor - When Was The Last Time You Drove A Stick Shift Vehicle?
The current trend across the automotive world is towards smart automatics, quick shifting dual clutch boxes, with 6, 7, 8, even 9 speeds. Heaven forbid, some cars even have CVT transmissions, which we find to be mostly dreadful.

It is clear that the engineers responsible for the drivetrain can set the car up perfectly to reduce CO2 and improve fuel economy with an intelligent automatic transmission, thus the push from Audi to reduce the number of models available with a manual transmission, to the chagrin of many ardent manual transmission die-hards.

This morning. 2 of my 3 cars have a manual. My 2012 A4 and 2006 Mustang GT. If they made a good SUV with a manual, I would have that too, but I had to settle for an auto in my Q7.

"Manual Labor - When Was The Last Time You Drove A Shick Shift Vehicle?"
Never a "shick shift". But a stick, a few hours ago.

Geez, I got alot of "hate" thrown at me. I feel bad. Better go for a ride.

Seriously, the R8's manual transmission is really special. It has a gated shifter that is very precise, quick shifting and makes this interesting metallic "rifle bolt" sound through the gears. At around 4000 RPM a valve in the exhaust opens up and the sound is amazing, especially with the top down. Hope you guys can experience one of these cars sometime soon. Hopefully Audi will continue the manual shifter, but that is not likely according to the automobile press.

Sept 2011 - My wife and I spent two weeks vacationing in Germany, and the rental car was a Mercedes C180 sedan, six-speed. It wasn't until the third day that I realized the car had the stop/start feature!

I still drive and prefer manuals to Automatics. Drove a rental car with an automatic and it just felt too weird.

5 minuets ago. 7 speed manual sports car 3 pedals :)

Having the gears changed for you, while superior in many ways, simply removes another ingredient from the recipe of driving. Those that don't like the art of driving well won't/don't miss it. But with most sports cars able to exceed the maximum posted speed limit in 2nd gear, stop from 60 in less than 10 car lengths... what kind of a challenge is it to drive a dual clutch sports car around town? The only thing you can focus on is your line....

In my opinion, manuals have no place in luxury cars for the most part. I drove a 5 speed manual 535i BMW from the 80s - fantastic drive. I drove a 2012 535i sport 6 speed manual - pointless and stupid. Why? b/c BMW builds waay more luxury into the 5er than ever before.

If you can't feel the road and hear a bit of the engine and tires going down the road - rowing your own box probably isn't the way to go. If you drive a windows up car (where having the windows down just doesn't quite feel right) same thing - no stick for you.

The biggest issue raised by this thread without question is that of the transmission on the upcoming 991 GT3. The 991 has become larger, much more refined and less rear engined feeling... Porsche is supposedly not going to offer the manual in the GT3. This will be a problem. While many GT3 owners track their car and might not mind the PDK on account of it being faster around a track, there remains loyalists who drive their GT3s on the road and there a PDK is not a good fit why? Generally the GT3 is not a poser car. Previously, it was simply too loud, too extreme and too wild to tame for those more interested in how they look driving their car. But now, the new chassis is much more comfortable and easy to push. So adding PDK will start to attract a less enthusiast based buyer.... At lease make it an option Porsche. Please....
