RUMOR: If Alfa Romeo Is Planning For A BMW 3-Series Rival, Could It Be The ONLY Automaker To Take Down The 3?
If there's one car that seems untouchable, it is the BMW 3-Series. While cars like the Infiniti G37 and Audi A4 have closed the gap, still the 3-Series continues to win big in competitive tests.

But there's one automaker that never has competed head-to-head with BMW's largest volume product -- Alfa Romeo.

And now word from an overseas publication seems to indicate that Alfa may be considering building such a product. Even more intriguing is that there is a possibility Alfa would consider building the vehicle in the U.S. to ensure costs were cut down AND lead times would be shorter.

So, if the price was right and Alfa worked its magic -- as usual -- and built a vehicle that brought out all of the right emotions, would BMW have something to worry about?

OR, is BMW still in the clear as it has its free maintenance program and better reliability than Alfa's questionable history?

Before you weigh in, just take ONE look at the rendering. I dare you.

...The Giulia will be the first all-new mainstream model launched under Alfa’s revival plan. The saloon, plus the mid-engined 4C sports car (due on sale in early 2014) and the reborn Spider (2015), are intended to put Alfa Romeo firmly back in contention as a viable global premium brand...

...The new car will aim to compete with the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series in Europe’s compact executive sector. This market is still very healthy, in stark contrast to the mainstream European D-sector market, dominated by cars such as the Ford Mondeo, which is shrinking fast...

...In truth, building the Giulia in the US will give a huge boost to the chances of a successful relaunch of Alfa there after the brand pulled out of North America in 1995...

FYI, the Infiniti G37 coupe took the Crown away the BMW 335i and is the new King in this segment, at least it's so according to Motor Trend. Here is the link to that post,

The G won on price and value, not because it is the better overall car.

What are you going to spin us next? That the Lexus IS350 is the best car in this class because it hits 60 0.1 seconds quicker than _________? Gimme a break.

@ Willis

Winning on price and value, which encompasses: performance, space, etc. does mean it is the best overall car.

I think you wanted to say that the BMW holds a performance advantage, though slight, over the G at that time.

But wait Cadillac beat Infinity a couple years later so... Cadillac is the ruling sport coupe:

Take down the BMW 3-series? The Lexus IS already did that.

No. I think it was the Lexus RX "Mlf mobile" and ES " Granny cruiser" did that. Pondosinatra is correct. Do not generalize.

Sales wise, didnt the 6 year old C class already accomplish this in June?

If it's a rear wheel drive then it has a chance, other wise forget about it.

If the Cadillac ATS can't do it, Alfa sure as HECK can't!

Fiat owns Ferrari and Maserati. It is rumoured that Ferrari is developing and modifying engines for Alfa Romeo and Maserati.Further we know that Marchione has delayed the Alfa Giulia becasue he wants to get both the driving dynamics and the styling "right" the first time.So I'm surmizing that Ferrari has had a hand in the development of this car. Saying that will it topple the 3 series. In terms of sales most definately not. BMW has become a brand name like zerox due to the last 30 yrs of putting out very good cars with great driving dynamics. It's also been the "yuppies" choice to show their affluence. On the driving side the 4 cylinder engine looks to be potentially competative. The 3 power amounts are 200HP, 250 HP and 300 HP from a 1.875 liter engine.Further supposidly Fiat is modifying the Pentstar V6 for Alfa employing multiar technology. Then I also read that Ferrari was developing turbo V6 engines for Maserati and Alfa. To call this a joke would be foolish. You can bet this is all being financed by Chrysler profits. Now it is pretty clear that the platform is going to still be Giulietta/ Dodge Dart based but both longer, wider and with a new rear suspension.I predict it will be a sportier drive than the Audi A4. If thats the case it puts it pretty close to the 3 series in driving dynamics.Of course this is all speculation but read the latest issue of "Car" magazine. Because of the engineering connection with Ferrari there are some definate possibilities.

I know that in the USA - definitely not. Chrysler/Dodge will get their nasty hands on the car and ruin it.

Interesting design, but it would need to undercut the 3-Series in price so that an AWD model, with comparable horsepower, costs less than a RWD 3-Series.

Decades ago, I purchased a new Alpha Spyder. I don't want to bore you with my woeful experience of reliability issues with that otherwise lovely little sports car.

The media just loves to print outrageous headlines that border on the absurd to garner attentions to boost readership. BMW does not have to worry about Alpha who loves to trot out show car exercises, but rarely if ever produces an advanced car. Alpha likes to stick to little fuel efficent economy cars with micro engines.
