NHTSA Black Boxes To Be Standard Issue On Vehicles Starting September 1st
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will not delay new rules setting standards for automotive "black boxes" set to take effect on Sept. 1.

In a notice posted Monday, NHTSA rejected a petition by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers — the trade group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and seven others — to delay the new requirements for event data recorders until September 2013.

The "black boxes," officially called event data recorders or EDRs, collect data about the seconds leading up to a crash and can help investigators determine the cause.

Very informative (NOT). What are the 15 data elements being recorded, for how long, at what time interval are the data collected, how is the accuracy of the data assured, who has access to this data and how is the access regulated?
