How Does The Lexus GS Hybrid Stack Up Against The Diesel Rivals?
You have to be brave to go your own way in the regimented corporate world. Even though diesel power dominates company car parks up and down the land, Lexus believes a petrol-electric hybrid is a better bet for delivering a winning blend of economy and performance. The manufacturer pioneered the concept back in 2006 with the first-generation GS 450h, and today nearly every model in the Lexus range features a hybrid option.

But how will the flagship version of the all-new GS fare against our current executive car champ, the BMW 5 Series? Not to mention the new bi-turbo version of the Audi A6 3.0-litre TDI, which has the power to rival the mighty BMW 535d and comes with the excellent quattro all-wheel-drive transmission.

That's a pair of very powerful diesels. Of note is the observed fuel economy:

Audi: 30.3 mpg
BMW: 29.7
Lexus: 25.6

Both of the twin turbo diesels had almost identical acceleration and fuel economy in the test.

Of course a hybrid can't beat a diesel engine, plus hybrid is way overpriced. But on stupid thing caught my attention and it shows how the Europeans are bias. They're calling the brand new GS's interior dated? Really?? It just came to the market and it's dated?

Uh, they meant the design of the interior.

designs can be dated even before it hits the market... its not when it comes out, its how it looks and how it ages...

Design is subjective.

Personally I find the interior of the new GS to be butt-ugly and ill-designed. It's not beautiful.

...And which one, according to proven trouble index will most likely have fewer shop visits? Right! The Lexus. Even tho's with deep pockets take a keen intrest in that whole concept of an expensive name brand should by all means neccessary stay out of the darn mechanic shop as often as possible. Lexus is not perfect, but it's proven time and time again. The BMW and Audi are great machines no doubt. I just wish they will get their act together with the quality (higher degree of excellence) issues the way Lexus does. But then again, they aint Lexus and so people who keep buying Lexus over and over again have that one thing in common.....Top Quality! Next!

Typical Lexus fanboy BS. Quality? All cars in this class are high quality. And Lexus quality is overrated, mind you.

lexworld the problem is that by just looking at BMW and AUDI's recent sales numbers, consumers in this income bracket don't seem to put to much emphasis on the "trouble index". Just imagine if this cars would have the same "top quality" as LEXUS, LEXUS would be out of business because that is their advantage. Like I stated before, when time comes due to replace my car, I would entertain any option regardless of what the "trouble index" states. Keep Consumer Reports and all that garbage away from me, its all biased and payed by the same auto manufacturers that want your dollars. Its called MARKETING! As long as I can afford it, its an option in my book. As of now, the only car I would purchase from LEXUS would be a GS, highly doubt I will get another LS since I like thinking outside the box instead of just looking at "Top Quality". By the way, define quality? I bet everyone here has an entirely different definition, just like luxury and what it means.

GS F-Sport proved in many comparison tests that it is the best handling car in it's class and it would be my choice if today i buy a car from this segment. And i disagree that the interior of GS is dated, i think it is one of the best looking interior in it's class with top quality materials used through out.

Here diesel is almost always cheaper than premium. As this test shows the new twin turbo diesels deliver 0-60 in under 5 seconds (US style testing) while averaging 30 mpg when driven by magazine editors. Both would probably do 35+ in real world highway driving with plenty of power in reserve.
