FIRST REVIEW: Does The 2013 RAM Truck Finally Have The Ammo To DO SERIOUS Damage To Ford's F-150?
As a former Ford F-150 Eco-Boost truck owner I got behind the wheel of the all new 2013 RAM Truck line for the first time last week in Nashville and I came away quite surprised and MORE than impressed with this outstanding truck.

And I could go into a full on boring review and make you work like lots of other sites to REALLY figure out what they thought.

So I'm going to make this easy seeing the ONLY real question from anyone that will read this review is how does it compare to the Ford F-150 and the others in the segment.

That sums up the MASSIVE list of improvements for the 2013 model year.

And now I can give you my laundry list of where the new RAM BEATS the Ford and others and where it falls short.

The RAM wins over Ford in these key areas:

1. And this is a BIG one...It's hands down the better driver. I loved my F-150 but the Ford steering feels very vague and soft compared to the BMW-like 'carve up the road' feeling you get driving the RAM.

2. The new RAM equipped with optional air suspension will change your mind FOREVER about the ride and drive of pickup trucks. I can't think of many cars OR trucks that would be a better daily or long haul driver than this new RAM. UNREAL and in our eyes the biggest breakthrough on the truck. Test drive it and you WILL be seduced.

3. Ford changed the pickup truck game a few years ago when it came to interiors but the RAM high end models (Longhorn, etc.) set the new standard. GORGEOUS.

4. The new U-Connect system is now the king of the hill in trucks over Ford's SYNC. Really well executed.

5. The gas mileage is BETTER than the Eco-Boost Ford's without having to rely on turbocharging. That means a LOT of you like to tow stuff. The stop start technology (first on a pickup) and 8-speed tranny do wonders. I was getting 23 on the HEMI 8 Longhorn during my highway test.

6. The RAM has lots of little cool features like locking the doors locks the side cargo storage AND tailgate with one button.

Where the RAM still lags behind the F-150:

1. And this is totally subjective and I know many disagree with me, I still think the F-150 has a better looking face and exterior. And the F-150 has stepped it up even higher on their 2013 which I'm hoping to drive shortly.

2. The Ford has better cab/box configuration choices. If I bought a RAM, I couldn't get a supercrew AND a 6 1/2 ft. bed in order to take advantage of the full small business tax deduction (section 179).

3. The interior of the beds on the Ford's are deeper and larger to my eye.

4. You can't get the cool tailgate step on the RAM.

5. Resale on the F-150 is next to impossible to beat.

6. I prefer the flat hood and vision of the F-150 vs. the big powerdome style hood of the RAM when maneuvering the truck in tighter areas and in parking.

7. I got spoiled by the numeric keypad on the door of the Ford because it allows you to lock the keys in the truck when you go to the beach and have no safe place to put the key when you go in the water.

8. Totally flat floor in second row. Chrysler hinted that was coming next year...

So what's my FINAL verdict?

If I were in the market right now, I would have to give a slight edge to the RAM because of these two key things that are most important to me.

1. The RAM is just nicer to drive and that new air suspension is AMAZING!

2. I like the new RAM interior better than the F-150. Looks way more expensive in the high end models.

So there you have it. In my eyes, the RAM is the champ for ME.

That's saying a lot because you all know I've always liked and OWNED the F-150.

I also believe it has a damn good chance to win North American Truck of the Year at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and will steal sales from ALL the competition.

Take a look at our RAM photos, some cool places in Nashville and chime in with your thoughts of my assessment...

You cannot be serious nor that ignorant.

The Ridgeline is up there with the Pontiac Aztek as one of the worst vehicles EVER on my list.

Ugly, gas guzzler, miserable ride, etc.....should I go on?

Wow, this is really pretty impressive and I don't normally like trucks... Love the gauge cluster and sounds like the motor and tranny pairings are real winners as long as the start/stop function is smooth and nearly imperceptible.

F-150 looks better outside? No way, it looks dated to me, since all they did was change the front grill and tail lights since 2004 when this body style first came out. From the side it looks the same aside from different wheels and lights. And the Fords ride really didn't impress me. We have these at work and they ride rough.

I agree - the Dodge is much better looking than the Ford.

You'd be surprised. Most buy whatever is the big talk. Many are not informed or used the advertising propoganda from the commercials as their reason. I buy what I buy because of what it is. I like Land Rovers because the luxury and offroad capability. No-one else offers that combo as well as Land Rover. I like BMW because of the driving experience, not the brand. I will be the first to admit that neither are the most reliable and Japanese makes are much more reliable, however I have had good luck with every BMW I have owned and Both My LR3 and my Discovery II (knock on wood) In fact, my 1987 e30 325 has been the best and most rewarding car despite the fact it needs a paint job and interior work here and there. My 85 745i has also been awesome, but the handling and fun to drive factor goes to the e30 despite the fact that with 16psi of boost the 745i is freaking fast and will destroy the e30 in a race even if it was only running on 5 cylinders. What is most rewarding about my e23 745i is the exclusivity and shear power and acceleration that rivals even todays muscle cars. I ran neck and neck with a GTO 6.0 a few years ago, which is not bad for a 4600lb 27 year old car with a 3.4l 6 cylinder engine.

Is this an article objecting discussing the new Dodge as it should....

or are you working for Dodge and being paid to glamorize and promote the Dodge product.

Clearly this article is a shill for Dodge and reads like a Dodge brochure and not a news article. SHAME on Auto Spies!

You CAN'T be serious.

This truck is the REAL deal. And like everything else we say will be a winner, you will see in their sales in 6 months.

I have an 09 Crew cab HEMI, installed a Diablo tuner and was enough to beat the ecoboost F150. I stump it at 35mpg and be bed squatted and shot off. This new Ram should easily outperform the eb v6 that will most likely not get power boost from the turbo engine for 2013.

The Dodge interior and instrument panel are a clear copy of the Ford F150.

'If you can't create it, just steal it' is the Dodge motto.

Neither the interior or instrument panel are similar. Judging by your ability to compare, essentially any vehicle made in 2013 are direct copies of one another. And last I recall, all the new Dodge vehicles seem to have distinctively different designs inside and out, as opposed to the 2013 Aston Mar- Er, Ford Fusion. That is a wonderfully executed, totally original design.

001, your post that the 2013 Ram has a "slight edge" over the F150 BEFORE you drove the improved 2013 F150 is premature, don't you think? I expect that the 2013 F150 has enough improvements to overcome this "slight edge" you have given to the newer Ram. I just found it a bit premature for you to declare a winner before testing the equivalent 2013 F150.

Personally, I drive the F150 regularly between Las Vegas and CA for work, and believe these are the deal breakers for me:
1. Electronic air suspensions are finicky after 50,000 miles and are expensive to maintain if you drive your cars hard in the 100,000 mile range.
2. Door keypads are a MUST for many truck owners; sounds trivial, but it's these everyday conveniences that become part of my "ownership experience". I absolutely HATE having large key sets in my pockets/jacket, and in the construction/blue-collar working world, you carry lots of keys. Not to mention, surfing/skiing on the weekends makes it a requisite that I leave keys in the truck.
3. Usable flat floor in the second row is a must for using the rear as a covered cargo area.
4. I'm not a fan of current start/stop technology, still not smooth and seamless, but more importantly, I can't help but think start/stop may end up being a source of reliability problems - adding more electronic complications to an already complicated modern engine is not a good thing. Sadly, it's unavoidable, and the F150 will probably employ this technology in its next generation engine anyhow.

Nothing to do with engine economy or supreme ride comfort (F150 rides fine for a work truck, and yes, transmission is less refined during start stop), but livability.
