STUD OR DUD? Audi Drops The Top On The 450HP 2013 RS5 Cabriolet In Germany
Flowing silhouette with perfectly balanced proportions and sharp details - in
RS 5 Cabriolet wins the dynamics of Audi especially nice shape. A frame in matt aluminum look sums up one of the hexagonal single-frame grille, its honeycomb grille insert, decorated with a 5-RS badge shines in anthracite. Wedge-shaped headlights with wavy edges glow with xenon plus units and LED strips that form the daytime running lights. The strikingly styled front skirt includes large air inlets and tapers to a splitter edge.

Essays on the door sills and the widened wheel arches dominate the side view of the tornado line that forms the shoulder of the RS 5 Cabriolet is drawn especially sharp. The housings of the exterior mirrors in aluminum look, the surface of the windshield frame and the trim around window wells and top compartment lid are made of anodised aluminum.

Like a flat, smooth dome, the light soft top of the RS 5 Cabriolet spans the spacious interior, a special foam layer provides high acoustic comfort. Opens by pressing a button and the soft top closes automatically in 15 or 17 seconds, even while driving at 50 km / h

When open, it restricts the spacious luggage room a little - of the 380 liters of volume it takes up only 60 liters. The rear seat backs can be folded down, split a load-through facility from the trunk into the back of improved variability. Targeted reinforcements give the open body rigidity, the aluminum front wings offset some of the resulting additional weight.

Elegant light bands glow in the LED tail lights, which dispense entirely on conventional light bulbs. Like the lights, the rear bumper is redrawn be diffuser is drawn far above, a honeycomb grille insert includes two large, elliptical exhaust tailpipes. On the boot lid, a subtle lip spoiler in matte carbon provides more downforce, if desired, the lips are painted in body color.

The Audi RS 5 Cabriolet measures 4,649 millimeters in length, 1,860 millimeters in width and 1,380 mm in height, a wheelbase of 2751 millimeters. Eight colors are available - a plain tone, four metallic and pearl-effect and three crystal effect paint finishes. The soft top is available in black, gray, red or brown. Audi also offers an optics package in matt aluminum and an engine room design package with materials of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The drag coefficient is 0.34, the underbody paneling significantly contributes to aerodynamic fine-tuning.

The interior

Characteristic of the RS 5 is the three-spoke steering wheel with flat-bottomed rim that is covered with perforated leather. The multifunction buttons can be use as intuitive as any other controls in the RS 5 Cabriolet. The terminal of the optional MMI navigation plus about coming out with six fixed buttons for the main menu to control the driving dynamics system Audi drive select, a single button. The white label, black dials give a strong contrast and can be read easily. The driver information system are ambitious driver a lap timer for lap times and an oil thermometer.

The sport seats are electrically adjustable and they have high cheek for optimal lateral support, integrated head restraints, lumbar support and an extendable thigh support. The reference is a combination of leather and Alcantara, optional black or silver moon Feinnappaleder. All leathers are pigmented to inhibit heating by sunlight. Alternatively, there are manually adjustable bucket seats and climate-controlled comfort seats with a ventilation function.

The interior of the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet is finished in black, the inner lining of the hood on request in star silver. Fine chrome trim, subtle trims in high-gloss black and carbon fiber inlays underscore the dynamic appearance. Audi also offers the no-cost deposits in Race aluminum, piano black finish, matt brushed aluminum or stainless steel mesh.

The backs of the seats, the deposits of aluminum door sills, the steering wheel, in the rev counter and the selector lever knob of the seven-speed S tronic to find RS-lettering. The door consists of two narrow strips that shine pedals and many controls in aluminum look. The Audi exclusive program offers many more options for customization.

The motor

As a driver for the RS 5 Cabriolet is a highly rotating FSI V8 naturally aspirated engine with direct injection. From its 4,163 cm3 displacement, he draws 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 1/min, 4000-6000 rpm it produces its maximum torque of 430 Nm. The 4.2 FSI with the red painted cylinder head cover, resulting in the Hungarian plant in Gyor hand assembly, achieves a specific output of 79.5 kW (108.1 hp) per liter, each hp has to move only 4.267 kg vehicle weight. The long-stroke engine with an aluminum crankcase breathing freely, flaps in the exhaust tailpipes vary the sonorous roar. Optionally available from Audi a sport exhaust system with black tailpipes.

The Audi RS 5 Cabriolet shoots himself in 4.9 seconds from zero to 100 km / h The top speed is limited to 250 km / h, at the customer Audi lifts them to 280 km / h. On average, the V8 with 10.9 liters of fuel per 100 km are satisfied. Its cylinder walls and the chain drive are optimized to minimize friction, the oil pump operates on demand.

The power transfer

Dual-clutch gearbox, as the seven-speed S tronic, the RS 5 Cabriolet, are characterized by high efficiency, which in this model improved by the high-ratio final gear yet. Switching is implemented by changing the clutches so fast and fluently that they are hardly noticeable. The driver, the seven-speed S tronic in the D and S programs can operate automatically or control to the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. A useful starting aid for the racetrack is the launch control. It allows for a great start on the engagement of the clutch for ideal starting speed.

The permanent all-wheel drive quattro gives the RS 5 Cabriolet decisive advantages in traction and stability. Indeed, its heart, the crown gear center differential is compact and lightweight. In normal driving operation, it distributes the torque in the ratio 40: 60 between the front and rear axles; if necessary it can be up to 70 percent of a maximum of 85 percent to the front or to the rear lead. The wheel-torque control, an intelligent software solution complements the work of the center differential.

If a curve inside wheel during fast cornering greatly relieved, it is braked slightly before slippage occurs - it is the RS 5 Cabriolet in the border area extremely long neutral.

At Audi offers the sport differential, which distributes power via two superposition stages active between the rear wheels. As a perfect complement to the quattro drivetrain is the RS 5 Cabriolet pushes the limit formally into the curve, it has any tendency to oversteer or understeer instantly prevented approach.

The chassis

High technical effort marks the suspension of the open four-seater. The five-link front suspension and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear axle are made in a wide range of aluminum. The speed-sensitive power steering system uses an electromechanical drive, it operates directly, sensitive and highly efficient. The body is 20 millimeters lower than the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the bearings are stiff, oversized stabilizers stronger. Forged aluminum wheels in high-gloss turned ten-spoke design from 9 J x 19 wheels with size 265/35 are standard equipment, optional are 20-inch wheels available in three attractive colors with tires in size 275/30.

When brakes are ventilated and perforated discs in weight-saving wave design in use, the front have 365 millimeters in diameter. The wave-shaped outer contour of the friction rings reduces unsprung masses by about three kilograms. Pins connect the discs with aluminum brake pots - a concept from the world of motorsport. The brake calipers are painted black, the front delay with eight pistons. The stabilization control ESC brings a sport mode and can be switched off completely. On request, Audi mounted on the front carbon fiber-ceramic discs with six-piston calipers.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is part of the standard equipment of the RS 5 Cabriolet. It allows the driver comfort, the characteristics of the steering, the seven-speed S tronic, the throttle and the exhaust sound flaps in the modes vary auto and dynamic, if a MMI navigation system is on board, the individual mode is added.

The sport differential, adaptive cruise control and dynamic steering, which varies its ratio according to speed by almost 100 percent, can also integrate into the system.

Another option, which is subject to regulation by the Audi drive select system, the sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) - a purely mechanical, without delay working system. Pairs of shock absorbers, which are diagonally opposite, are connected by pipelines and a central valve together; during fast cornering, the system increases the support of the outside front suspension compression. The characteristics of the shock absorbers can be adjusted in three steps.
The equipment

The Audi RS 5 Cabriolet is being launched with an extensive standard equipment of the band. It includes, among other things, the parking system plus, heated seats for driver and front passenger, automatic belt feeder, a wind deflector, the lighting package, the driver information system with break recommendation and a comprehensive package of restraint systems. With an imminent rollover shoot thick aluminum plates up behind the rear headrests. The sporty and luxury options include a three neck-level heating, the convenience key, the high-beam assistant, adaptive light and the three-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning.

The RS 5 Cabriolet, all support systems from the A5 family choice. Adaptive cruise control maintains the open-top four-seater on the desired distance to the vehicle ahead and support the driver when braking. Below 30 km / h speed it causes a full emergency delay. The Audi side assist monitors the area behind the vehicle, helping to change lanes safely. Audi active lane assist with keeping the track easier. The parking system plus can be extended by a rear view camera.

On the field, multimedia, Audi offers an entire system of building blocks at the top of the MMI navigation plus with a large hard drive, a DVD drive and seven-inch color monitor. Your perfect match is Audi connect including car phone that connects the RS 5 Cabriolet to the Internet. The front passenger can move freely through the integrated Wi-Fi hotspot with their mobile devices on the web. For the driver's customized Audi connect online services are available - from the Audi online traffic information to navigation with Google Earth images and Street View.
Deliveries of the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet starts in Germany in spring 2013. The basic price will be 88,500 euros.

Considering the RS5 couldn’t match the current M3 coupe, the M4 will scorch this.

Also the RS5 coupe weighs around 4000lbs, and this convertibe is 4220lb!! Waaay too heavy for this class.

Got to love someone calling Audi over weight compared to BMW. From the BMW and AUDI USA websites (the RS is not listed on the website):
M3 Convertible (Manual): 4145 lbs
M3 Coupe (Manual):3704 lbs
S5 Coupe (Manual): 3858 lbs

Let's talk when these cars get under 3,200 lbs each. One thing you can count on from BMW is their next generation will be bigger, heavier, more powerful, more luxurious and with less road feel(and I have owned BMWs for 22-years now). The only mass market luxury brand that seems to be paying any attention to weight is Porsche - - - and it shows. The latest Boxster (the entry level, hair dressers car with only 315HP)has already scorched the E92 on the ring - - - the fastest car on the ring BMW has to offer.

Press release states the RS5 convert. power to weight ratio is 4.267kg per hp.
4.267*2.2= 9.38lb per hp....9.38lb*450hp= 4,224.33lbs. Also M3 convert has a metal hardtop.

S5 has a six cylinder..RS5 has a V8 like the M3....

Car&Driver tested the RS5 coupe vs the M3 coupe both with DCT, M3 was 3600, RS5 was 4000lb.

F10 M5 does the ring in 7.55 faster than a Panamera Turbo.
Also the M3 GTS does did it in 7:48.

Also ring times are fairly irrelent, they are often set by different drivers years appart, with different spec tires, in different temp/conditions.

1) I did miss the F10 M5 ring time, so it looks like BMW does have one car faster then a Boxster S. I don't count the M3 GTS as this was a special edition, track oriented car. If you must compare it, it would be closer the the Porsche GTS RS(7:33), which once again scorches even the M3 GTS both driven by the most consistent driver on the ring - - - Horst von Saurma.
2) I'm not sure why Car & Drivers knows the weight (3,600 lbs) of the M3 better than BMW - - - but it's OK since they all cheat on this one. Although it is unusual for the factory to list a greater weight than actual (not good for marketing), but the USA site list it as 3,704 unladen weight for the manual with no DCT weight listed. The only weights I believe these days are comparisons where they actually weight the cars, which are few and far between.
3) I'm not sure your point about the it being unfair that the M3 convertible has a hard top? The two will compete directly against each other, so it is a fair comparison whether you put the weight in the top or the weight in the chassis. This is another one of those mysteries, why BMW chooses to use a heavy metal top on a car they bill as their highest performance line. The hard top merely panders to their target luxury market while ignoring the driver enthusiast. Putting more weight at the top of the car is the worst possible place to do it. The performance numbers for the M3 convertible are substantially worse than for the couple.

My whole point is that calling Audi's heavy is pointless given that BMW has some of the heaviest cars in their class. Once again, I own a BMW, but have never owned an Audi, so I'm not defending Audi on this, most of there cars are also over weight

Terry989,
Maclaren was saying RS5 is over weight IN THIS CLASS. He didn't say Audi is over weight or BMW is light.
S5 is a V6 coupe, and eventhough it still weight more than the V8 M3 coupe.
I agree that BMW got a bit too heavy in recent years as they couldn't afford to use a lot of light material like Audi, which has shared their platform with many other manufacturers. But the New 3 series is bigger, more powerful and lighter than the previous one, and the next 7 series is meant to use a lot of the light weight technology from i8, I believe BMW will make some really good sports car in the future.
I agree with the comments on Porsche. F**king love them! I'm really looking forward to the new cayman!

i have an m3 convertible e93 and will say flat out, it is too damn heavy !!! i definitely miss the e46 and feel the best car bmw had as of recently is the 1m. finally something like what an M car should be.
i really think M and RS cars technically shouldn't ever be convertibles as they are both too heavy for true sports cars. they have the look, not the drive.
i just dont understand how ferraris' 458 italia convertible weighs 50kilos more than the coupe and all other companies convertibles weigh significantly more.

like the m3 convertible weighing 420lbs more than the coupe, thats just terrible..

RS5 coupe weighing near 4000lbs is a lot! Thats close to M6 coupe weight with only M3 power, and size. Plus with a base price of 88,500 euros for the convertible just get the S5. The RS5's small performance gains over the S5 are not worth the premium.

All in all, this car is a STUD!

As per everyone's comments about the weight of these cars, yes, all the cars have gotten bigger, thus heavier, but another major reason for the weight is the added technology. More technology usually means more wiring, more insulation, more glass for screens, hard drives, etc. If you strip out all the amenities, including 50-way power seats (exaggeration of course) and you shave weight here and there, then you will get a car that weighs under 3200 lbs.

But if its pure sports car you want, then you wouldn't be in the convertible versions in the first place, and also, then you wouldn't be getting into an M or RS anyway... Shell out a bit more and get a Cayman R.
