Woo Hoo! Texas Begins Posting 85 MPH Speed Limit Signs
The claim that "everything is bigger in Texas" will likely gain further credence later this year, when the speed limit on a stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio hits 85 miles per hour — the highest limit in the country.

Constructions crews on Wednesday began posting 85-mph speed limit signs along a pending section of toll road on Texas' State Highway 130. This 41-mile stretch of highway, which will open for traffic by Nov. 11, is on the east side of Austin and heads southwest toward San Antonio.

85 mph speed limit is nothing compared to the 65 mph speed minimum. All American highways should have a minimum speed requirement.

The 65 is just photoshopped in that picture. SH130 will not have a minimum speed limit. In fact I haven't seen a minimum in Texas in years. However that road is so empty, you'll have no problems passing people.

85mph is crazy, bad enough people can't handle 70. Perhaps the insurance companies lobbied for this so people only have 1 accident and there are no physio costs or payments to dish out.

Idiots in trucks flipping them at 95mph (you really think ppl will stick to 85?)

Any good car in good condition will be fine at 85 mph. If you are not able to drive in a secure way at 85 mph in a good car....then you should not have a license....

There are many small/city cars that will not be able to safely move at that speed. There are also SUVs that become, let's call it twitchy, at speeds over 70 mph.

It really boils down to what the purpose of the speed limit is, who has the responsibility for safe driving, and can we trust the average Joe/Jane to know the limits of their vehicle in all conditions and drive it well below those.

Nonsense

The Audi A1 and Mini are perfectly capable of doing 110mph very comfortably.

Whatever city cars you were referring to if they cannot do 85mph comfortably have no business being on the road.

Whether they don't have business on the road is irrelevant, they are on the road. Toyota Yaris, Chevy Aveo, Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta, Fiat 500, Smart ForTwo plenty of "modern day" cars that are absolutely unsafe driving at such speeds. Plenty of old cars two. By raising the speed limit and forcing them to go fast their right to use the highway is being effectively denied. If there is an alternative route, then fine. But if there isn't or it is much longer then it becomes a socioeconomic issue.

As far as driving on a highway at speeds lower than the speed limit, it is often more dangerous than driving slightly faster with the traffic.

They also have these road-trains, trucks with multiple trailers going ridiculously fast. They have to because of bandidos de carretera. Much fewer of those in the Lone Star state since Walker, the Texas Ranger is behind you all the time ;)

Does anyone really know what the sign means? It means that cars should not exceed 85 MPH. It doesn't mean everyone have to or should drive 85 MPH. All that this means is that you can travel up to 85 MPH on this stretch of highway without breaking the law, but it is just as lawful to still go 55 or 65 MPH...

Lets not talk about how its unsafe for small cars to go that speed. If it cannot go at that speed, then stick to the right lane and go 60. No one is forcing you to travel at the speed LIMIT.

Having lived and worked in the Austin area recently and used the 130 tollway to get to and from the airport weekly, I can honestly say that 85mph is nothing on that road. It was 75mph before that, and 75mph seemed entirely too slow. The road is super smooth and wide open with virtually no traffic whatsoever. If you drive it, it's hard not to do 100mph+ down that thing. It's practically a racetrack.

I35 is an effing nightmare during rushhour. It takes well over an hour to get to the edge of the city on a Monday evening, and you're still stuck in traffic. The city was built around the highway rather than the highway around the city so there is literally no room to expand the highway.
