Dyno Indicates BMW Fibbed On M5 Horsepower Ratings
We knew the upgraded S63tu Twin Turbo 4.4 liter V8 in the F10 M5 would be stronger than the standard S63 Twin Turbo V8 4.4 liter units in the X5M and X6M even accusing BMW of sandbagging. We just did not think it would be this much stronger. We first reported on the differences between the S63 V8's in the M SUV's and the F10 M5 in June of last year and the M5 S63tu V8 has higher compression at 10.0:1 versus 9.3:1 and runs more boost at 22 psi versus 17 psi for the SUV's.

So according to DynoJet, the M5 is really pushing out 620 HP if their standard 15% power loss holds true.

Then again, is it possible that the 15% may not be as constant as they believe and BMW is really delivering a 6% power loss through the powertrain?

Isn't Dynojet well known for showing numbers that are higher than other dynos? High power German turbo cars have had fairly conservative "paper" ratings the last few years. Probably because the hp that is quoted is for a worst case 100+ degree day just to be safe.

Absolutely agree. German manufacturers are known to state numbers which are on the low end of the high end. Just as they did years ago with their claimed 0-60, usually with a tank full of petro, spare tire, the whole nine yard, and get very conservative numbers, while Japanese counterparts would empty out their car to perform the 0-60.

Its all a part of their attempts to shroud the car's true potentials.

Wow, 527hp and 476lb-ft at the wheels is pretty nuts. Plus the max power platues for about a 1200rpm peroid.

Well they have to be over rating their 2.0 turbo because it blows the doors off of the competitions smaller cars with more powerful ratings. The Hyunbdai Santa Fe sport with the 270hp turbo engine takes 9.5 seconds 0-60 while the X3 doesn it in well under 7 sec. The 528i is bigger and heavier than the sonata and is down 30hp yet beats it 0-60 by over 2 seconds. heck, its faster than the lighter more powerful regal GS. They have to be over rating this engine because I doubt both Buick, Hyundai and Ford are all over rating their turbo engines.
