STUD or DUD: Did Volkswagen Knock It OUT Of The Park With The 2013 Golf's INTERIOR?

STUD or DUD: Did Volkswagen Knock It OUT Of The Park With The 2013 Golf's INTERIOR?
Now I know some of you will say "Why did you do another 'STUD or DUD'," but the reason is clear, folks. When Volkswagen unveiled its all-new Jetta stateside, it was universally panned for having a mish-mosh interior; however, its sales were stronger than ever.

And here's the funny thing: It's interior really wasn't so great -- at least relatively to the previous generation Jetta.

It's navigation unit became smaller -- yet faster -- and the trim pieces on the interior were a mix of upscale and something you'd find in an older General Motors product. There were some really hideous, hard plastics scattered about the cabin; however, it did get three things "right": The steering wheel, shifter and e-brake. The "touch" points of the interior.

Looking at the 2013 Volkswagen Golf's photos, I can't tell from the pictures if this interior is the real deal or a real let down. Much like the Jetta it has a similar upper dash and it looks swell but if its that same hard plastic, that will be a problem. The good news is that VW incorporated a large navigation unit and the "touch" points look solid.

But there's one exception that has to be considered about all the above -- what we're seeing is the European-spec model and Volkswagen of America (VWoA) is NOTORIOUS for skimping on what gets delivered here in the U.S.

An excerpt from Volkswagen's press release follows:

Improved interior

The new Golf is more spacious, with a passenger compartment that is 0.6 inches longer than before, giving 0.6 inches more rear kneeroom. Shoulder room is improved by 1.2 inches in both the back and front of the car. Cargo capacity has also been enhanced, while the load area is more accessible.

A key feature of the interior is a new infotainment system, which incorporates a five-inch touchscreen, even on entry-level European models. At the top end, the Golf features a navigation system which has a large, eight-inch touchscreen.

That interior is nicer than a good amount of so called luxury cars.

@Agent00R you are so right about the Camaro. I couldn't believe how cheaply made the center console was and how you could actually cut yourself on the sharp plastic mold lines on the console surrounding the e-brake handle. But I could see the cheapness in its photos.

After the criticism it got from the Jetta I think this will have a better quality interior and the Jetta interior will be revised soon as well.

Chewy, I totally agree with you. I say its the best interior at this price range. It looks way better than any COROLLA, CIVIC, or MAZDA 3. BTW It looks way better than my daughter's MINI.

It's a great interior but I slightly prefer the current one. Same goes with the outside.

It looks hardly changed from last year, inside and out. Conservative and inoffensive but I wouldn't run out and tell everyone about it.

Again, with anyone who has never driven the Golf or any VW Vehicles, you will not appreciate the QUALITY of their interiors.

The finish on all the surfaces you come into constant contact with, the soft touch plastic, the designs that keep certain thing out of your way.

I am currently in a 2012 118d M-Sport 5-Door. Fantastic vehicle to drive, Nice Chunky Steering Wheel, Yet every time i get into the vehicle and close the door, my right knee gets trapped between the door closing handle and steering wheel. Now this is a slight design flaw that i also noticed in the previous model but it seems to be worse in this one.

Look at the last 2 pictures, everything that looks like metal, is probably Real Aluminum or at the very worst, High Quality Stainless Steel.
Something you just don't get in a Honda, or any of the NA or Asian Manufacturers.

So you keep comparing flashy, Low Quality Interiors to the VWs, we who actually buy them will continue to Appreciate them.

Not really, VW has been using this steering wheel since 2010 on the 2011 VW TOUAREG. I might be wrong but I believe BMW started using it last year on the new 3 series.

The Jetta is not a seller in Europe largely because the hatchback provides for far more efficient storage and utility than the sedan. And, because Americans are more concerned with cost than performance and quality of interior, the American Jetta was logically decontented. Otherwise, the Golf interior looks very similar to current model Golf although the LCD looks larger. I find the current generation's interior quite nice and I suspect VW is not going to diminish the Golf's assets given is much widen world audience.

Looks like Audi has a strong influence on the VW design group. I applaud the interior design of the new Golf as superior and luxurious in a German fashion.
