Move Over: Audi To Overtake BMW In Global Sales In Less Than Seven Years
The gap between Audi and BMW is closing up, which might bring an end to BMW’s seven-year reign in premium auto sales.

In August the gap between BMW and Audi in the luxury car segment was reduced to only 2,110 units, which could mean that Audi might have a chance to end BMW’s seven-year reign in premium auto sales. From January to August Audi saw its sales increase 13% to 961,000 units, while BMW’s sales were up only 7.8% to 963,110 units. From last year the gap between the two automakers has considerably shrunk, taking into consideration that in August 2011 BMW had a lead of 40,513 units.

Many recent comparison tests prove it, the annual profit figures prove it, and the sales figures prove it - Audi is a force to be reckoned with in the premium auto segment and the future global leader in premium auto sales.

Seven years is a long time out to forecast, many shocks and surprises can occur in that time. Here are some that could stop the forecast from being true:
1. MB to merge with BMW
2. Audi's US west coast strength causes a backlash [remember BMW in the 1990s versus 1980s]
3. VW somehow upsets the Chinese and the latter disadvantages VW/Audi growth in China
4. Audi fails to come up with a new design language, and fail to increase sales with all the models continuing to look the same as they have done for the last 15-20 years.
5. Hyundai targets Audi rather than Lexus and MB customers
6. A giant asteroid hits the earth
7. Fill in your idea(s) here!

Thats nice but believe me Mercedes will have the last word, they are gearing up for domination, not simply back and forth overtaking

didn't they say they would do this by 2015? FAIL, besides who cares who sells more product, comes down to who is the best to drive and look at and it's not Audi, sorry dudes

The only people who will like this post are the Audi Fanboys. Even if Audi "Overtakes" BMW, both brands are healthy and people will pick the vehicle that they like.

A brand being number one doesn't mean anything to me. I’m more into the Merits of each vehicle than I am into volume sales. High Volume sales do not mean better vehicles. Well it does to a fanboy but I digress.

Look at it like this; if a person is all set to get a BMW, do you think that finding out that Audi is number one will change their mind, and make them pick the Audi instead of the BMW?

He's right, LexSucks. When you replied, the only Audi fan to post was GermanNut (and that nut thinks I'm anti-Audi). So, I think you DO care.

So basically you are saying that I will not consider any vehicle unless that brand is number 1 in sales? And this is based off of what? Comical. So basically the only cars that I limited to purchase are GM or Toyota vehicles (which ever one is currently on top). That's beyond funny.

AlleVier, I know you're an Audi fan. I misread your post when I criticized you for being a BMW fan. My apologies.

Good, maybe that will allow BMW to stop trying to be the GM of luxury brands and instead focus on building the best, most desirable vehicles. Luxury cars are low volume products, so I don't care about being #1 in volume, personally. Besides, if you build the best, you'll get the sales anyway.
